""Mel's Hole is a geographic anomaly discovered by Mel Waters on his land near Ellensburg, Washington. Waters claimed that he lived in or near Manastash Ridge, Washington, about nine miles due west of Ellensburg, though later investigation revealed that no such person was listed as a resident. According to Waters, the hole has paranormal properties, including a possibly infinite depth and the ability to restore dead animals to life. The first references to the hole were made in a series of interviews with Waters, made by Art Bell on the American radio show Coast to Coast AM (which focuses on conspiracy theories and the paranormal). Waters initially appeared on Coast to Coast AM on February 21, 1997. He subsequently appeared on February 24, 1997, April 2000 and January 29, 2002. His most recent appearance on the show was on December 20, 2002. Bell was incredulous through much of the initial interview, and certain elements of the story seem to parallel H.P. Lovecraft's The Colour Out of Space."" Art Bell - Mels Hole part 1 of 27
Great post pheelios. I could not help but giggle when he said "Mel is the guy with the never-ending hole."
I had forgotten all about that. My favorite part of it was the guy who wanted to go down in a cage, in case there was some subterrean creature waiting to eat him.
""Eventually, Mel's curiosity got the best of him, and he decided to do some experiments. A former shark fisherman, he knew that he could determine whether or not there was water in the pit, provided he had enough fishing line to extend to the water. He simply strung the end of his line through a roll of lifesavers candy, and lowered the line down. Mel let the candy hang at 1,500 feet for long enough to let the candy disolve in the theoretical water, and then he lifted his line back to the top. The candy remained. No water at 1500 feet. Mel's next experiment was to lower a one-pound, lead weight down the pit, and when he reached the end of his spool, he simply tied on a new spool of line, and lowered that as well. Spool after spool after spool, Mel lowered into the mysterious cavity, until he had used 80,000 feet of fishing line - over 15 miles worth. ""
I heard the original show. It's so hard to convey how it was so easy to suspend disbelief while the program was in progress. Coast To Coast provided real radio entertainment at the time. Of course, during this same era Howard was at or near the comedic peak of his own show. Good times... Seems like it was only 16 years ago. I was still a child then... a little white girl.
yeah howard and art were the kings along with rush. I wish art and howchie would go back to terrestrial. I love these old show off from work been listening all day.
I was working through the playlist on Youtube, and Youtube recommended this video for me: Kind of funny that it did make local news.
Seriously, does anyone have pictures from the site he put up? The story is great and would make a better Hollywood movie than the shit they show these days. But it sounds to convenient that the coin could not be photographed and he did not take photos of the second hole with the metal sides out of respect for the Basques. I would love to see just some kind of photo or film.
""Mel Waters and the Devil’s Holes Somewhere in the wilds of Washington State is a bizarre geographic anomaly that locals believe may well be a gateway into another dimension. While the legend of the Devil’s Hole allegedly goes back for decades… if not centuries… the public at large did not become aware of the phenomenon until 1997, when legendary radio host and paranormal enthusiast, Art Bell, invited a man named Mel Waters to be interviewed on his globally syndicated radio program Coast to Coast AM."" Sup Pheelios, this was one of my favorite Art Bell shows. Most probably not real, but a great story. Good Stuff.
