So, my mother went out and bought herself a laptop a few months ago. In the meantime, she had taken her old XP desktop and put it away in the closet. She threw away the mouse and keyboard, and gave away her LCD monitor. NOW she decides that she wants to retrieve the files that are in her desktop and put them on her laptop. She went and bought a PC transfer cable, and expects me to take car of it for her. I am pretty sure that her old machine has to be hooked up to do this. Am I wrong, or should I tell her to cram it and bring her shit to Staples so they can take care of it?

    :hat:

Thank you in advance for your fine technical advice.

Those transfer cables are pains in the ass, especially between older and newer OS. can you completely boot up the old machine without a monitor? If not, you are gonna need a monitor. The software in those cables need it all booted up. Can you borrow a keyboard and monitor from work? We had them laying all over the place.

Yeah. I have one of those. They are cheap. or you can purchase an external drive case and plug the hard drive into it. You'll have to pull the hard drive but that should be easy.

Even if I could, I wouldn't lug all that shit to her house, then back to work. I work downtown, remember.

There's a zillion ways to do it. You could just remove the hard drive from the machine and mount it in an IDE-to-USB converter box (maybe $20 or so) and then attach it as external storage to the laptop.

If you prefer getting the machine up, the bare minimum is having a keyboard (to avoid a BIOS warning), and after that you MIGHT be able to pull files over the network.

But again, there are lots of ways to skin the kitty.

Edit: Beaten to the punch. Well, good luck anyway!
