    i'm a baseball loser
    I enjoy it

do pitchers attack hitters less often these days?

    sure seems like it

I think they went at guys more often at the height of the roid era

    and yes--i'm drinking

Oh hell yeah. Pitchers back in the day dominated because they would brush guys off who just crowded the plate. Now you have to play fair and not throw near anyone or hurt anyone, even though they wear enough protection to stop a bullet. Guys just crowd the plate today and have a big advantage over most of the pitchers in the league.

It's a different "play fair" game today unless it's the shift, which is complete BS. It has ruined the game a bit. At least for me.

me and my wife's grandfather would both ban the shift if you put either of us in charge of the league
though it's amazing so many guys who can hit just don't hit accordingly

Most hitters only know how to hit a certain way these days. They don't even steal bases anymore like they used to or move runners with bunts. Rickey Henderson's stolen base record will never be broken. They do not risk running or bunting as much anymore because guys are paid too much to hit the ball.

There are so many games now where a team is down a run or two with first and second and no outs and the teams will not bunt the guys over to scoring position. It's horrible.

Love baseball too, it's the only sport I follow. Even before the roid era there were pitchers who were great at intimidating hitters. Bob Gibson used to stand up on that mound (it was higher back then) and glare down at the hitters. They knew he'd uncork one at their heads if they dug in or crowded the plate, you could see their knees buckle before the pitch was even released. Don't know of anyone currently who dominates and commands respect like he did.

Yep, the lack of bunting skills, good fundamentals, and smart decision-making drives me nuts. I hate it when someone gets up and swings at the first pitch right after the guy in front of him walked on 4 pitches.

I know, you'd think if someone dropped a bunt down the line a few times teams would stop shifting on them but nobody tries it.

Small ball wins games. Billy Martin dominated by doing it.

This guy wrote a whole article on why the bunt is dumb now and threw up charts. He says it's a waste of an out and teams are too smart today. What he doesn't know or say is that guys just try to blast the ball today and earn numbers for themselves and big contracts. They have no idea how to bunt or steal today and it costs teams games. Well maybe try and teach the guys how to bunt and steal and it wouldn't be so "foolish". That's why it's gone down as being effective. More often guys get out trying to hit HR's. The bunt would be more effective in a lot of situations. But they have to make the game "more exciting". Yeeeah really seems to be working.

The league is about hitting "exciting" home runs now and padding your own stats for big contracts, and with all the teams out there, the talent is so thinned out. No one can play the game anymore. Sad.

Steroids did not affect the game as much as letting guys crowd the plate and swing away at every at bat did. That's what has produced the numbers difference compared to years ago. Fair play and swing away for the fans. That was the killer.

a lot of the best athletes are pitchers now
but they a lot of them stand there like statues when the ball is in play
since they were kids they get barked at to cover first when needed--go for the bunt--be aware of it

and you see it non stop--they just can't make the connection that they wear the glove
    to play D on occasion

I wouldn't mind seeing the Jays win it all, they have an exciting team and their GM made some smart moves to bring in good players without giving up much in return.

Agree. That's why the Yankees have only won once since 2000. They live and die by the big money players just swinging for a HR ever AB. Horrible ball. And that 2009 win was because of that vacuum that they had to right field caused by the other stadium and whatever else they said was causing it. Pop flies were going out to the upper deck, and I'm a Yankee fan saying that. :snicker:

Look at Brett Gardner. Speedy as hell and really never gets caught. A man capable of stealing about 50 bases a season. Now they don't run him! Too risky. Let guys swing away and hit him in with a HR. Just horrible ball to watch.

What a SB base decline. 50 SB to about low 20's now. Countless runs and wins lost by this type of ball.

I agree-the bautista annoys me though
and their field turf is odd looking on tv

but I do like the fact they've suffered for so long and have a shot

Yeah it's been a rough season there after that last season and promise. Plus I feel for any team that has Cano on it. Dude never puts in one ounce of effort. The guy loves to make his money and if the chips are down, he quits. Never runs out a ball and for a guy who has decent legs, he will not steal a base.

I agree with you about Cano, its a bummer because his talent is incredible...the plays he makes on the field look effortless when he feels like playing. But yeah, he has no eye of tiger. Speaking of bunting and playing actual baseball (moving the players around the bases) I think the M's have left more players on base this year than any other team, its been heartbreaking.
