This Company Is Still Making Audio Cassettes and Sales Are Better Than Ever

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...udio-cassettes-and-sales-are-better-than-ever
The audiocassette tape is not dead. In fact, one Springfield, Mo., cassette maker says it has had its best year since it opened in 1969.

“You can characterize our operating model as stubbornness and stupidity. We were too stubborn to quit,” said National Audio Company President Steve Stepp.

NAC is the largest and one of the few remaining manufacturers of audiocassettes in the U.S. The profitable company produced more than 10 million tapes in 2014 and sales are up 20 percent this year.

“Probably the thing that has really enlarged our business at a faster phase than anything is the retro movement,” Stepp said. "There's the nostalgia of holding the audio cassette in your hand.”

NAC has deals with major record labels like Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group as well as a number of small contracts with indie bands. About 70 percent of the company’s sales are from music cassettes while the rest are blank cassettes.

“There was a drive from the independent bands to get that warm analog sound again, and it just continued to grow and grow,” said NAC Production Manager Susie Brown.

The company still uses machines built in the 1970s in its production lines.

Well, when hipster douche bags grow up, find themselves to be 42, and have to move out of moms basement we'll see how good those sales are.

For some reason they are coming back. Im big into vinyl and most of the news this year has been cassettes. I think they even have a Cassette Store Day next year like Record Store Day.

Vinyl can at least claim something digital can't, full analog reproduction. Cassettes are crap, wear out, cheap material. Blah.

2 years ago I was able to pick up a Bunch of the Ion Audio cassette Players/converters as a closeout (cheap $3-$5) I bought only 1/4 of them doing a company a "favor". Held on to them a couple of months right before Xmas season.
Essentially a "walkman" with audio out
I sold them for a hefty profit - $45-$50each (wish I had bought more)

the first time i saw a NEW record store opening i told my wife jokingly it is like if i opened a vhs store. i figured it would be out of business in a month. Now i had rigth around a thousand vhs tapes. a few years back i threw most of the copied ones out and the factory ones i gave away free on a forum to anyone who would pay shipping. tons of obscure 80s movies....

now i bet the fucking VHS will come back :(

Cassettes were and always will be crap. They don't have "warm analog sound", they have dull, hissy analog sound. And like most new vinyl pressings, most probably source from digital anyway, so it's completely pointless and total hipster shit. Cassettes suck. Vinyl at least has it's advantages in the right circumstances.

I have a nice Nakamichi tape deck, so I'm hearing cassettes for about as good as they can get and it has nothing on digital. It was a cheap, chintzy format and any "comeback" is purely nostalgic with 0.0 audial benefit.

    ............so young.

I still have a box of ''cassingles''......which I will now continue to hold onto and hope it turns into some vacation money for that one fine day when I actually take a vacation.
My long playing cassettes all got played into oblivion and/or tossed out of a moving car when my car stereo decided to eat the tape....which happened often.
