The Kee Bird was a United States Army Air Forces Boeing B-29 Superfortress, serial 45-21768, of the 46th Reconnaissance Squadron, that became marooned after making an emergency landing in northwest Greenland during a secret Cold War spying mission on 21 February 1947. While the entire crew was safely evacuated after spending three days in the isolated Arctic tundra, the aircraft itself was left at the landing site. It lay there undisturbed until 1994, when a privately funded mission was launched to repair and return it. The attempted recovery resulted in the destruction and loss of the airframe by fire on the ground.

those of us in the seattle area who adore these old birds can go up from time to time and take a peak at Paul Allen's collection that he regularly will start up and have flown for the public to watch.

look at the collection. its fucking impressive. the FW-190 is on my list that i need to see run and fly.

I have this documentary, all that work and they almost flew it out, if it wasn't for that freak accident with some fuel cans. Such a shame!

Damn. That's a shame. Would've been kick ass to see that thing take off after all those years.

B29s had engine fire issues early in their service 50 years earlier. Was it an engine fire?

There's one here in Marietta at the base next to where the Bell bomber plant they built a lot of them at was. My grandfather built housing for the workers during the war.
