It is often listed as one of the top 1 or 2 albums in the last 40 -50 years. I think it was #2 on Rolling Stones list of 500. One of the Beatles, I forget which, said that they were trying to top Pet Sounds when they did Sgt. Pepper.

I've given it a few listens and just don't get it. It's not bad and I love a few songs but I love every song on Sgt. Pepper and many others. I know I'm dating myself here. I was too young when it first came out and have always listened to Beach Boys hits as opposed to whole albums. Anybody else have an opinion?

It had more of an impact on my life than "Sgt. Pepper's...".

Its one of the best albums of all-time.

    I'm 31.

    Ditto.

I've got a Beach Boys folder with their "classic" albums from the early 60s but it doesn't hold much interest for me.

The only reason I have it is because I'm born and generally raised in California so my father would play that shit when I was a kid.

It now evokes childhood memories of 1970s Navy squadron parties my parents would have at our house our trips to the beach and other outdoors stuff.

The music is kinda lame but the memories are all I have of my parents now.

    TY for your attention. :coffee:

I gotta admit I'm kinda in the same boat...I like some of the songs OK, and I respect the Beach Boys and their legacy, but I never entirely "got" them. On the other hand, Sgt. Peppers is great, but not even in my top 5 Beatles albums...

I really like their harmonies and appreciate some of the pioneering that Brian Wilson did in layering and some of the things he used to get the sound he wanted. Like I said, I love almost all of their hits. I respect FTM's music opinion. I'm gonna keep trying.

He wanted to come back at Sgt Peppers with this but he went crazy instead so it took him a few years

This just floors me give it a listen when you've got an hour to spare :)

a couple of good songs and a lot of crap.

Perhaps the most overrated album of all time.

It's fashionable to include Pet Sounds in snobby music lists. It was a ground breaking record at the time (I guess) but so was Paul's Boutique and that album still holds up very well.

Brian Wilson was OK, but he was no John Lennon.

I have to admit that I don't get it either. But I guess others question some of my musical likes too.

I felt the same about Pet Sounds on the first few listens through it. Eventually something clicked, and I really loved it. It's kind of a "musician's" album, in that you have to kinda appreciate that it was ahead of its time as far as instrumentation and arrangements.

Pet Sounds is one of my favorite albums of all time.
It's aged well to these ears which I'm afraid I can't say for Sgt Pepper's.

I've always preferred Revolver or the White Album to Sgt Pepper's.

That's the other Beach Boys album I like a lot.
I'm not much of a Beach Boys fan ... Smile (and the various lost tracks that have appeared in various forms on bootlegs), Friends, and Pet Sounds are the only Beach Boys albums I still play regularly.

That's always the biggest "compliment" I hear given this album.

"Technically its a great piece of work."

I just want great music. :hic:
