Ok, my friends and mine had a heated discussion of who are the best backing bands. Backing bands are bands that are known by name, but back up singers who are generally recognized as solo artists. These bands may or may not have done their own albums and had successful careers on their own. Here is my list of th top 10:

    1.) The Band (Bob Dylan)
2.) E Street Band (Bruce Springsteen)
    3.) Crazy Horse (Neil Young)
    4.) The Heartbreakers (Tom Petty)
5.) The Spiders from Mars (David Bowie)
    6.) The Attractions (Elvis Costello)
    7.) The Eagles (Linda Rondstadt)
    8.) The Revolution (Prince)
9.) Booker T and the MGs (Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, others)
    10.)The Wailers (Bob Marley)

The Funk Brothers! END OF THREAD!

They were the band that performed on every Motown record!

The Funk Brothers are great, but I am not that into 60s soul. Booker T and MGs are just so influential to that era that I had to include them. I would say the Funk Brothers were second in that genre.

The Revolution doesn't really count since Prince wrote all of the music.

But count the historic hits! Dozens and dozens of top hit songs over almost 20 years before B.G. fucked them over one last time. Those guys were slaves and worked in a sweat shop and earned pennies on the dollar while making millions for everyone.

Booker T and the MGs have as many too. I guess it is because I like the songs they backed up on more.

That isn't true. Prince wrote most of the music, but he collaborated with The Revolution on many songs. But most of these backing bands didn't write the music they performed when they were performing as a backup band.

Mick Ronson and the Spiders from Mars. That guy could wail. One of the great underrated guitarists ever. As a band they rocked pretty hard.

George Clinton's backing band was far better when it was Parliament Funkadelic.

To me, fleet wood mac was a backing band for Stevie nicks. I know they all wrote but her songs endure, without her they would have been one of the shittiest bands ever
