    Kitten Season Winds Down
    by Beth Stern

As usual, summer at my house means kitten season. We’ve cared for so many little nuggets the past few months, socializing them and getting them ready for their new homes. What a bittersweet thrill it is to leave each of these precious bundles in the arms of their new families.

Although this summer was typical in many ways, there was also something unusual about it. Namely, Buddy (adopted!), Wilson (adopted!), Blossom (adopted!), and Milly (shown below), a recent arrival still acclimating.

These little ones will always have a special place in my heart, because all of them are facing life with little or no vision; they were either born without eyes or lost them to vicious infections. (The dramatic exception was our sweet recent foster Donut! I’m so thankful that North Shore Animal League America saved him from the “To Be Destroyed” list at a local municipal shelter…and that the brilliant medical team at Animal League America was able to save his infected little eyes! No issues at all!)

It’s an awe-inspiring experience to be there for these particular kittens, and I thank Animal League America for entrusting them to me. But I also want to thank two great feline teachers, Hugo, a blind kitten I fostered earlier in the year, and our resident blind cat, Bella, who has been such an inspiration to me. She was rescued by Animal League pregnant and blind two summers ago. I fostered and found homes for her babies, but I just couldn’t let her go! These two wise beings gave me the confidence and experience to continue helping cats who need a special brand of TLC — so they can have the experience and confidence to live their lives to the fullest.

Like Donut, many of our kittens this year were rescued from near-euthanasia, beautiful Blossom included! They are truly living proof that Animal League America’s no-kill promise gives a precious second chance to so many unique, irreplaceable animals who would be “destroyed” at most other shelters.

That, for me, is the essence of rescue, and why I’m so happy to be part of Animal League America’s exciting new awareness campaign, Get Your Rescue On™. I’m proud to wear my rescue cuff and declare that I believe in rescue and know firsthand the joy and wonder it brings to life.

If you’ve been thinking about adding the pleasure of rescue to your life, this is the time to act! Kitten season will soon be over, which means all the wonderful adult cats who were overlooked for the past few months are now eagerly waiting at your local shelter. As the temperatures begin to drop, nothing will warm your lap and your heart more completely than a contented, purring, grateful cat to spoil and call your own.

    xo

    Getting Our Rescue On! Together!
    by Beth Stern

In early September, I joined my colleagues at North Shore Animal League America to launch one of the most exciting rescue awareness campaigns ever. As I’m sure you’ve heard, it’s called Get Your Rescue On™, and already hundreds of people from all walks of life have donated to get their rescue cuffs, taken a selfie with their beloved rescue pet, and posted it to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, using the hashtag #GetYourRescueOn.

If you haven’t already signed on, I hope you’ll do so now at www.getyourrescueon.org. All it takes is a $25 donation for the handsome rescue cuff, a cell phone for the selfie, and a lovable rescue dog or cat to share the spotlight. The donations are providing much-needed funding for all of our lifesaving programs, and the campaign has become a unique way for people to show their ongoing support not only for the concept of rescue, but especially for the world’s largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization: North Shore Animal League America.

I was surprised and honored when, shortly after the launch, one of Howard’s photos of me and my beautiful, blind Ragdoll kitten, Buddy (now adopted!), appeared on the NASDAQ building in Times Square. Talk about great exposure for Get Your Rescue On — which is really what the whole campaign is about: raising the profile of rescue and making it something people know and care about.

On Friday, November 20th, Animal League America will hold its annual fundraising Gala, at the Pierre in Manhattan. This year’s theme is…what else?…Get Your Rescue On, and it’s going to be a thrilling, inspiring, star-filled event. Once again, proceeds from the Gala will benefit Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center, a project near and dear to my dreams for a better future for all Mutt-i-grees.

Our host is the hilarious Lisa Lampanelli, and our super-special guest is Amy Schumer. (Yes! That Amy Schumer!) And then, to top off the evening, we’ll enjoy a wonderful performance by the gifted women of Wilson Phillips.

Friend and supporter Rachael Ray will be attending, along with more than 300 other supporters. I’m sure that Rachael, like everyone else in the room, will be moved by the stories of several champions of rescue who’ll receive our Crystal Collar Award.

I’m excited to be presenting this award to four National Student Ambassadors of our incredible Mutt-i-grees Curriculum, which is now reaching more than 3,000,000 students in over 4,000 schools across the country. We’re proud of these dedicated young people, whose compassion and hard work ensure that the future of animal welfare is in good hands.

We’ll also pay tribute to a beautiful couple who adopted One-Eyed Willy (now called Sir William), a brave feline who came to us with many injuries. His condition was so grave that he required extensive medical care, physical rehab, and nurturing. Willy is blind and still has other physical challenges, but though it all, and with the loving patience and care of several fantastic staff members, Willy waited — for four long years — until the perfect family came and took him home.

Events like our Gala prove to me that so much of animal rescue requires a group effort. Last spring, for example, North Shore Animal League America joined with the American Humane Association, Pilots N Paws, the Petco Foundation, and my dear friend and philanthropist Lois Pope of Red Star Rescue to conduct a dramatic relocation transport that brought more than 200 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens from overcrowded shelters in Alabama and Virginia to our Long Island adoption center and to A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue, in Palm Beach, Fla. It was an unforgettable experience, and I was privileged to be part of it.

So whether we gather for a festive fundraiser or a massive rescue, people getting their rescue on together can make a lifesaving difference. There’s so much work yet to be done. Let’s do it together!

A Special Note of Thanks: Congratulations and many thanks to Gabriel Cordell, whose Roll With Me for North Shore Animal League America generated nearly $5,000 in donations to support Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center. I have nothing but admiration for Gabriel, who rolled his manual wheel chair more than 120 miles in early October to support our no-kill mission. During the final stretch of his awe-inspiring journey, Gabriel was accompanied by a little dog named Franklin, one of our adopted special-need pets who now enjoys life in a cart, thanks to generous people like you and Gabriel. Here’s what Gabriel had to say about Franklin and Animal League America: “That little guy was the rock star… Seeing him reminded everybody how special the animals here at North Shore really are. Animals need love and care just like we do. They have hearts and they have souls, and people need to do more for them. I felt doing this roll was the best way that I could make an impact and help support an amazing cause.”

I didn't know cats could inspire and give one confidence. All the cats I've ever experienced either want you to pet them or to fuck off. They are truly the dicks of the animal kingdom. I don't think she could walk and chew bubble gum at the same time.

That fucking liar! Milly is not BLIND or visually impaired!!! :

bethostern Milly can see. Due to an infection she was born with, her second eyelids are showing. We went to an eye specialist veterinarian and her eyes will not get worse nor ever look perfect. She doesn't miss anything! Perfect with her litter box and sees very well! She will have Maggie with her as she moves into her forever family home tomorrow.

Holy shit, Beth can't tell the truth about anything! Bella (formerly named Kitna) was NOT pregnant when she was rescued (according to NSAL's website):

North Shore Animal League America recently rescued blind Kitna and her four tiny kittens from uncertain futures at an overcrowded municipal shelter. Kitna and her kittens were originally discovered in a junkyard, with the devoted mother nursing her newborns. A Good Samaritan brought the family to a shelter.
