A fire destroyed Big Tex this morning at the State Fair of Texas.
The blaze was reported shortly after 10:15 a.m. at the fairgrounds in Dallas.
“It’s a very sad day for all fair-goers,†fair spokeswoman Sue Gooding said. “We did lose the clothes, his hat and head,†she said.
Allen Ferrell, who was visiting the fair with a church group from North Richland Hills, said the fire was short-lived.
“Big Tex was done in about 10 minutes,†he said.
Gooding said smoke was first seen coming from Big Tex’s neck, and she suspects the fire was electrical in nature. A motor moves the mouth of Big Tex as he greets all fair-goers with a "Howdy, folks."
Only the hands, Dickies belt buckle and skeletal structure was left of the giant cowboy that has welcomed fairgoers for 60 years.
Police blocked off the area, and firefighters hosed down hot spots in the wreckage. Crews then began disassembling the frame.
Mayor Mike Rawlings said it was a shocking loss for the fair.
"Big things happen in Dallas, and Big Tex was a symbol of that. I'm sure we'll rebuild him and make him better than ever for the 21st century."
Rawlings rushed to the fairgrounds shortly after he heard the news.
"Everyone is so emotional about this," he said. "I guess I thought I’d pay my respects to Big Tex."
Fourteen-year-old Kyle Hazelib was visiting the fair for the first time Friday with his father. They arrived just after the fire was extinguished.
"It’s just a real shame," he said, regretting that he never saw the fair icon intact.
Kyle's father, Rick, said he hadn't seen Big Tex in person since he was 8 years old.
“This is really startling," he said. "I'm just shocked."
While the Hazelibs were unable to get a picture with the big guy, other activities continued as usual at the fair, which is in its final days this weekend.
“It’s a sad way to end the fair,†Gooding said.

They're going to rebuild the 6 million dollar Tex. He'll be bigger, faster, stronger. His Dickeys will have to be 20 sizes larger.

So, The state fair of Texas had a rough day yesterday. First, Big Tex went up in flames. Then, last night, one of the rides fucked up and about 24 people were stuck on it for hours, 165 feet in the air.

One of the State Fair of Texas' tallest rides malfunctioned Friday night, stranding two dozen riders in the air for more than two hours.

Riders in the Stratosphere's hanging seats were stuck dangling about 165 feet in air when the ride lost power at about 9:11 p.m.

Carol Stradtman, one of the stranded riders, told NBC 5 by phone that all of the lights went off and the ride just stopped.

    "It's extremely scary," she said.

The 24 riders were on the ground at about 11:20 p.m. Dallas Fire-Rescue said all of the occupants were safely removed from the ride after it was manually lowered.

Power was restored to the ride by 10:50 p.m., but there appeared to be some issue that prevented the ride from immediately lowering its passengers.

Two Dallas Fire-Rescue technical rescue trucks were at the fair to help.

Stradtman told NBC 5 that someone had climbed the center of the tower at about 9:40 p.m. and appeared to manually attempt to bring them down. She said a friend who was not on the ride said there was some kind of mechanical difficulty but said she had not been given an update on when or how they would get off the ride.

No injuries have been reported, Dallas police said.

The Stratosphere, a 200-foot tall tower, turns and swings riders out over the fair.

The Dutch-made ride stalled at the Minnesota State Fair twice in as many days in August, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.
