Billy Squier's 1981 smash hit "The Stroke" isn't about masturbation or hand jobs

It's about his dealings with non-talented, cokehead music industry executives with no conscience... they shake your hand, then endlessly fill your ears with bullshit, non-stop stroking of your ego, how they're about to give you your big break... but what they're really doing is trying to bleed you dry as an artist where they slip on by to the next sucker.

Now everybody, have you heard, if you're in the game
    Then the stroke's the word
    Don't take no rhythm,
    Don't take no style
    Gotta thirst for killin',
    Grab your vial and

Put your right hand out, give a firm handshake
Talk to me about that one big break
Spread your ear pollution, both far and wide
Keep your contributions by your side and

    [Chorus]
    Stroke me, stroke me
Could be a winner boy you move mighty well
Stroke me, stroke me, stroke me, stroke me
You got your number down, stroke me, stroke me
Say you're a winner but babe, you're just a sinner now

Put your left foot out, keep it all in place
Work your way right into my face
First you try to bet me, you make my backbone slide
When you find you've bled me, slip on by, and

    [Chorus]

Put your left foot out, keep it all in place
Work your way right into my face
First you try to bet me, you make my backbone slide
When you find you've bled me, slip on by, and

    Stroke, stroke stroke stroke
Better listen now, said it ain't no joke
Don't let your conscience fail ya' just do the stroke
Don't ya' take no chances, keep your eye on top
Do your fancy dances, you can't stop you just
    Stroke me, stroke me

Oddly enough, Buddy Holly's song "Peggy Sue" was written about a famous hand jobbist back in Lubbock.

"Cock Me Tonite" as it was called by MTV executives. The video is universally agreed upon as the worst video of all time.

The concept for the video was Squier's alone. He said he wanted to show a person getting dressed at home, checking out their clothes and hair, dancing in the mirror, air guitar, etc in prep for a big concert that night.

MTV scheduled him for a "World Premiere Video" time slot but Billy fired the first two directors and had only 2 weeks to get the video ready for his MTV date (they tried to push it back, but MTV wouldn't guarantee another slot if they did). The new director/choreographer, who was a friend of Billy's girlfriend and was hired at the last minute, told Billy to dance around like he does on stage, but without his guitar.

After the video premiered they thought about pulling it from MTV but the problem was the song itself became a huge hit - Squier's highest ranking song ever (#15 Top 40 charts; #1 on rock charts). So on one hand you have this huge backlash against the video, but you also have a huge hit song so the video was left in place.

Squier was on tour and sales plummeted. Arenas that were once sold out, now had 50% sales. Squire fired both his managers one month later.

"I couldn't figure out why Capitol didn't pull that video and make another one", said Warren DeMartini of Ratt who was the opening band on the tour.

"I liked him very much," says Rudolf Schenker of The Scorpions, "but then I saw him doing this video in a very terrible way. I couldn't take the music serious anymore".

"I don't care if the director was lying dead on the floor," says Pete Angelus
, manager of Van Halen, "you shouldn't have put on a fucking pink T-shirt and danced around like that."

"Did Billy not notice the pastel satin sheets?" said Arnold Stiefel, former manager of Rod Stewart, "I don't know that Barry Manilow
ever did such a gay video"

Billy blames the whole mess on the director said, "the video misrepresents who I am as an artist. I'm preening around a room. People said, "He's gay" or "he's on drugs". It was traumatizing to me".

The director however says, "Let there be no doubt, "Rock Me Tonite" was a Billy Squier video in every sense. If it has damaged his career he has no one to blame but himself".

Interesting story. I always heard him (Squier) say that he had no idea why/how that video happened ....

Thank you for this. I have been spending almost every night for 32 years wondering what that song was about.

Oddly enough.. his drummer, Bobby Chouinard, suffered from a mild form of gigantism ..and died of a heart attack at age 43

That's just the way it was back in the day..Nuthin' more, nuthin' less ... Had a stack of blank 90-minute TDK tapes on the side of our Pioneer home stereo system (that was purchased at Federated Group) .... I taped every album I bought so I could play it in my boom-box while we were all hangin'' at the BMX park

I was down with Fred Rated ..
