While Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith have called for an Oscar boycott, John Singleton, who became the first African-American nominated for the best director Academy Award for his 1991 film “Boyz n the Hood,” doesn’t have a problem with this year’s diversity-lacking nominations.

Singleton, who’s directing an episode of FX’s upcoming “People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” says the nominees depend less on race and more on what’s eligible in a given year’s award cycle.

“There’s only so many slots, though,” Singleton told Variety when asked why the Academy did not nominate any African-American nominees. “There are a couple of movies that may have (warranted attention) but … It’s all subjective. It’s almost like the lottery.”

 

You mean they didn't do a Breakin 16 Electric Boogaloo this year?

It's not like it never occurred to the committee that none of the final nominees were black. They were certainly aware of the lack of diversity in the top selections. I'm actually surprised that they didn't hit the brakes and fool with the votes, just to prevent this kind of criticism. (Which is what Spike and Jada are saying they should've done.)

There weren't any slave movies this year so it wasn't clear to voters who they should be guilted into nominating.

 

for the last couple of years, all the good black actors have been working mainly in television. maybe that's the some of the reason.

What I don't get is that Hollywood has been labeled for so long as the ultra-liberal, politically correct, race conscious, gay conscious, trans conscious, sector of society. They are so over the top politically correct that most average Americans get sick of it at some point. Yet we are to believe that in this group where they welcome diversity that there is this conspiracy that the voters only want white nominees.

I was listening to the radio yesterday and they were talking about the water crisis in Flint, MI. Their water system failed and residents are getting tainted water in their homes which is causing a ton of health issues. That is mostly black city. I'd be willing to bet if you asked those black residents what is more important, having more diversity at the Oscars, or having clean drinking water? I'm guessing you know where their priorities stand.

 

Blacks have been self segregating for years.

 

There is no real diversity in Hollywood when it comes to power. It's white men. Women, older actresses, black, Asian, Hispanic are all token players.

Jennifer Lawrence did not deserve a nomination, neither did Redmayne, it just goes to show no one voting watches the movies. They vote for a name or a concept.
