Entertainment Bowie ripped off The Sweet

    While Bowie was recording "The Jean Genie" Sweet was in the studio doing "Blockbuster". Sweet heard a rumor Bowie was doing a song that sounded like what they were doing but they dismissed it. Sure enough a week or so before Blockbuster was released The Jean Genie was released. The guys in Sweet were horrified.




    I got a chance to meet Steve Priest of Sweet a few years ago and asked him about it. He didn't seem to have much of a problem with it - he saved his venom for Queen.

    Maybe the reason he wasn't upset about The Jean Genie was because Sweet ripped off the Yardbirds!




    Seems to be a few "similarities" with Sweet songs.

    I just read it was the other way around. Considering the songs both came out at relatively the same time, it's probably a case of "great minds think alike".

    The story was someone - probably a tech guy - was also involved in Bowie's recording. Of course it's who you want to believe.

    Probably jealousy. There are instances where Queen sounds like them and they always felt it should have been them who made it big. They had just signed to open for the Who on one of their major tours. Then their singer got beat up and had his throat stomped on by the attacker. They had to cancel and were bitter they blew their chance. Of course they were delusional. Sweet is nowhere near the same league as Queen.
