NFL is the next "big tabacco"...

It's time to ditch the pads and helmets. There aren't all these brain injuries in rugby...

I still remember 2-a-days in August in full pads... motherfucker.

The moment I read the headline about Belcher, I thought about Chris Benoit, the WWE wrestler who killed his wife and kid. He was described by his colleagues as a friendly easygoing guy but then became a murderer. Its neurological injury as much as people don't want football to be. I remember the other NFL guy whose name I cant remember who a few years ago killed himself and wrote a detailed letter about it and he was a fairly intelligent successful businessman. Those kinds of sports are idiotic and do cause real brain damage but the money and fame make it worth the risk for people.

Doubt it. Football is too much a money-making machine to make any changes.

A case could be made that Chris Benoit was set up. It was all just too bizarre to have happened the way they said it did. Easygoing guys just don't methodically kill people over a weekend. If it was a heated argument and things happened in the heat of the moment I might be convinced.

Dave Duerson is the guy you have in mind.

There's no comparison between hockey and football hitting, either. You never purposely hit with your head and you don't usually take any direct hits to the head at all. You don't leave your feet when you hit so your entire body weight isn't transferred the way it is in a lot of football secondary hits. Even in the hardest open-ice checks, the initiator skates through the hit and the other guy doesn't absorb all his momentum. You get hit mostly between the shoulders and hips and almost never in a way that decelerates your brain instantaneously from speed to zero and the boards and glass give a lot more than you think they do going just by the sound if you've never actually played the game. I know that football no longer teaches head tackles and you can find brutal hockey hits (including open-ice KOs) all over you tube, but it took 20 years of hockey to collect as many of those types of hits as occur in a single NFL or college football game and virtually any hockey hit that resembles football hits is a penalty.

Why aren't boxers included in this study? On average, a boxer takes more direct hits to the head during training and a fight than a football player. The term "punch drunk" refers to Korsakoff's syndrome and famous boxers like Frazer and Ali (before Parkison's) suffered from it but yet didn't show homicidal or suicidal tendencies.

If this becomes a "thing", how else can already dumb guys make it?

Let's get real. You don't see Harvard and Yale players in the NFL hardly at all for a reason.
