A British tourist is fighting for his life in hospital after he was stabbed in the head by a mugger in San Francisco.

The 44-year-old man was visiting his niece when they were attacked by a man and a woman on Post Street, near Franklin Street, at about 8.30pm on Friday.

The male attacker chased after the tourist, who refused to hand over his bag and tried to run away.

The assailant, who described as a muscular black man, stabbed his victim in the head with a knife, police told SFGate.

The British tourist is now in a life-threatening condition at San Francisco General Hospital. His 23-year-old niece, who is from southern California, was not injured in the attack.

The muggers got away with the green messenger bag, which contained the man's passport, credit cards, cell phone and cash.

Terrible what happened to the poor guy, but always give up whatever they're asking for. That way you *might* have a chance.

    Oh, California. Nevermind.

Only criminals are allowed guns there. I forgot.

So much of that city's a shithole. They just keep it nice around the Tech CEO neighborhoods and Pier 39 for the tourists. Outside of those areas, you're on your own.

Technically not that bad of an area, but it borders both the Tenderloin and the Fillmore, which both have their elements. The thing is, it's such a small city, it doesn't really matter where you are, anyone could be anywhere.

It is a relatively safe city though. Much safer than LA.

Huge homeless problem with the city undergoing new building and gentrification. Great place to live if you have a lot of money...otherwise, it's impossible for middle income people to live there in decent apartments. If you're poor or mentally ill and poor then you live on the street.

The homeless problem has been atrocious since at least the 1970s. It's not just today's tech gentrification, though now it's a hell of a lot worse. The saddest thing is nobody seems to want to do anything about it, they just want to argue about bullshit things.

we had family in seattle from San Francisco this weekend for a funeral. having grown up on SF I told them that the last time I went back to visit, I could not wait to leave. downtown is crawling with shady figures and the homeless are EVERYWHERE begging aggressively.

at least in Seattle I CCW, but never experience the issues I have in SF

I've always thought that if I were homeless, I'd much rather be homeless somewhere like Miami where at least it's warm.

San Fran is chilly as fuck, even in July... not to mention the assholes that are homeless in a place like Detroit

Idiots, hop a train and get temperate
