So yesterday went to checkout this movie after seeing the promos on TV. Two brothers struggling with life in different ways living in a small struggling steel community filled with drugs, illegal gambling and underground fighting. Figured it looked interesting and Christian Bale usually provides decent acting performances. This movie is odd because the cinematography is great in portraying the poor mountain communities of the Appalachia and the acting is quite good with Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana and especially Casey Affleck playing a Iraq war veteran struggling to come to grips with life after the war in the declining steel community. But the great acting doesn't really translate into a great movie. The character buildup is lengthy and makes the movie drag on quite a bit at times and all that time spent building up the characters is wasted with a very anti-climatic ending. They jam the plot with lots of themes (PTSD, Steel outsourcing, drug/alcohol abuse) but never really touch on any of them in great detail which makes the movie feel kind of scatterbrained. Lots of things happen in this movie and they kind of just expect you to accept them without much explanation. It's not a horrible movie but not great either definitely wait until it comes to Redbox or Netflix. I give this movie 3 out of 5 stars mostly for the acting performances.
