    Buccaneers fire coach Lovie Smith
    10:41 PM ET

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have fired coach Lovie Smith after his second year as coach.

"After careful consideration, we informed Lovie that we have decided to make a change," Buccaneers Co-Chairman Joel Glazer said in a statement Wednesday night. "I want to thank Lovie for his hard work and dedication to the Buccaneers during his time here."

A Bucs coach, when contacted by ESPN's Josina Anderson, said he was surprised by the news.

"Is this true?" said the coach, who wished to remain anonymous. "We all just met with Lovie individually today. This is strange. I wonder what happened?"

The Bucs will hold a news conference on Thursday afternoon to discuss the move.

They finished 6-10 this season, after going 2-14 in Smith's first season with Tampa Bay.

"This decision was difficult on a variety of levels," Glazer said in the statement. "I am disappointed that we were not more successful these past few seasons, but we are committed to doing what is necessary to give our fans the winning team they deserve. As we move forward, General Manager Jason Licht will oversee the process for finding our next head coach."

At least they got a clue long before Chicago did--nice guy? maybe. Good coach? Not so much.

Jim Caldwell is cut from the same cloth. Nice guy. Calm demeanor that works well in the clubhouse. But he sucks during games. He's also slow to recognize when something isn't working. They Lions never adjust.

Speculation is Tampa is promoting the OC. Or they maybe have a trade for another coach? Tampa has the track record.

I think trading for a coach is cool. Happens so rarely.

Tampa exceeded expectations, so this was surprising. I guess he was just the hometown stop gap to get em through a couple seasons of cleaning up Schiano's mess. Like when MLB teams hire fan favorites, so the manager doesn't get killed everyday during rebuilds.

He still has 3yrs left on his contract, so he was well paid at least.

They needed to fire Dungy, cause he couldn't get the offense over the hump. Gruden did that, but had such a cluster fuck going on at QB that the offense couldn't make up for the defense getting old.

Dungy got a ring w/ Indy thanks to Peyton Manning doing whatever the fuck he wanted on the offensive side of the ball. He probably even had more input on offensive personnel than Dungy did.

Gruden won with Dungys D. Glorified OC.

Passed up ARog. Should have been fired, then shot. He then went on to ruin MNF.
