It's fairly obvious that Howard uses callers to bring up things he wants to talk about. Today had two examples. BTLS and Rosie. The Rosie caller he made sure to squeeze in because he knew the interview would be an hour and the caller would not be there.

My question is why? Why can't he just bring up these topics?

Because it sounds more spontaneous when he takes a call. Even though they're screened up the wazoo, Howard still likes to go with the bullshit theory that his show is improvised.

Nothing on the show "just happens" anymore
That's why it sucks, that's what made it great

It gives the illusion Howard still takes phone calls from the general public.

If you've ever called the the show you would know how it (or any other radio show) works

    You call in
The screener asks you what you want to talk about
they ask your name and your location
they then put up a screen for Howard that says:

Mary from Yonkers wants to talk about Rosie--

You don't get picked up if it's a topic Howard doesn't want to address

If you've listened over the years, sometimes Howard will say "Jim's on the phone and wants to talk about Gary's pitch"

I don't understand the mystery or confusion about this, every time I've called I've had a topic or asked to comment on something that Howard was talking about.

There's no mystery as to how it works. I get it. I dont get why he needs callers to bring up topics he wants to talk about.

That it's so tough. He knows tons of people with troubled kids. It's sad. He wishes them tge besht. Etc. But he only addressed it because a 'caller' brought it up.

This isn't what is being discussed here. You are being obtuse on purpose or you are ignorant.

This discussion is about the Wigman planting "callers" to discuss his agenda. The agenda he cant/won't bring up on his own.

As Booey would say its not "organic"/

It seems like a lot of the calls are aired by either set up professional callers to direct attention to something Howard wants to talk about but doesn't want to seem too eager to mention, or they are done by radio obsessed callers that sit around and call shows all day and know what topic to mention, what to say, and how to act on air. There's a lot of paid radio phone actors and a lot more people who just want to hear their voice on air and feel validated. If you listen to other shows that take a lot of calls from random people, the majority of the callers are on a horribly shitty connection, are often very nervous and can barely speak, they're boring and not funny or tell the worst story you've ever heard, they're listening to the radio in the background with the delay, or talk over and interrupt the hosts constantly. Genuine radio calls from random listeners do not sound like they do on the Howard Stern Show for the most part. The majority of them are too polished. Howard does take random calls occasionally but they often sound like the lady today who suggested that Howard calm down and get into his "catnado" at home.

I've called in multiple times over the years, never been on air. You have to call about 10 minutes before start time or you will get a busy signal for the rest of the show. One has to sit on the phone for the entire show at that point and there's almost no chance of getting on. I assume a genuine caller has to predict what Howard will talk about, but he's far more likely to pick a regular approved caller for the topic he mentions (out of a huge list of topics one could think of). There's probably a hotline for regular callers so they don't have to keep getting a busy signal, I think that has been mentioned on air. There's a little to no chance that a regular person listening to the radio can call up and discuss something while the show is on.

It is baffling that Howard tried to say he didn't read what people wanted to discuss for so many years. Artie would come in late or sick or was sick the day before and callers would slam the shit out of him. Artie called Howard out, accusing him of using the callers to say what Howard really thought, and Howard said something like "I'm just plunking down the phones, I don't read what they called in for." That's awfully funny because several people in years since have been lambasted by Howard for bringing up something they didn't mention to the call screener.
