My 16 year old is looking at cars to buy and we think we have found one but the guy says the ac needs recharged. Can someone tell me about how much this runs? It's on a 2004 grand am.

Thirteen bucks if you buy a kit. Forty if you take it to a mechanic.

I had to have my GN recharged and converted to the newer refridgerant when I bought it. It was about $150 which included replacing a few worn out items. I think the straight recharge was $100. If the system has a leak it is generally an inexpensive repair.

Express interest in the car and have the system checked out at a qualified shop before fully committng. A reputable seller should have no issue with this.

    i could be wrong,
but if it just needs recharged, they would have just recharged it.
    compressor could be $800+.

id pass unless its otherwise in great condition and less than 3K
i hate to recommend a foreign car, but....

If it needs recharging it likely would be because it has a leak. So it needs diagnostic work to find and fix the leak. That could be anywhere, and include parts that aren't cheap. So you're talking money for diagnosing and finding the leak, then replacing lines or other components that are leaking.

Unless it's super cheap and you consider it disposable I would not be purchasing an 11 y/o Grand Am.

Good move. If it were a cheap and simple fix, odds are heavy they would have done it before putting it up for sale.

...take any car your serious about to a dependable independent shop for a pre purchase inspection. 100 bucks for an inspection is nothing to spend before you throw down thousands or sign a loan for an amount like that. air conditioners can fail for a number of reasons but every seller will tell you "it just needs a charge". it can cost a grand or more to fix an air conditioning unit if a major component fails.
