I love hockey. I think it's the best sport going. And I've been a big fan for decades..... but until I heard this sports show Saturday morning talking about the record stat I never thought about it.

Take the Detroit Red Wings. Their record is 29-20-11. You look at that and it doesn't look too bad. Right? It's actually pretty bad. The record in reality is 29-31. But because the way it is shown it doesn't appear so. Wtf?

Why does the NHL do this? I understand those are OT losses and the loser gets a point, but wouldn't: 29-31 (11) be smarter? Is it to give the illusion of better records? I don't get it.

That said, wow the year the Washington Capitals are having.

It's based on points. A tie is better than a loss I believe.

    2 points for regulation win.
    0 pts for regulation loss.
Goes to OT, both teams get a point and the team that scores in OT or wins the (fucking dumbass) shootout gets the extra point.

Some great trash talking that would not be tolerated today.

I remember when the NHL changed to both teams getting at least one point for a tie in regulation back around 89 or so and then they played overtime for the extra point. It used to be brutal before that with both teams playing a defensive style, content to walk away with one point each. After that teams would play an offensive style to get the other point, then eventually that led to the shootout and now 3 on 3 for 5 minutes.

If you've been a fan for decades, you'd understand how shootout and overtime losses are calculated.

It's ri-goddamn-diculous. I hate OT and turn off the set if there's a shootout. 3 on 3 OT is bush league at best. May as well just flip a coin if you don't want ties. Which I don't understand. What is wrong with a tie? To get a point in a loss feeds into the everybody gets a participation trophy mindset.

Why not go right to the source and query the Shed's own former NHL player and historical pictorial archivist @LaserTilt?

They fucking ruined hockey, used to be the best sport by a mile, now it's unwatchable. Gary Bettman and the owners can go rot in hell.

I wish they would have just kept ties, but then again, I'm a purist when it comes to the NHL.

Your 29-20-11 example breaks down to this: Detroit is 1-5 in shootouts this season, so that means that they would have had 6 ties, one less win and 5 other OT losses giving them a 28-25-6 record (62 points) under the old rules - essentially a .525 winning percentage. Not nearly as bad as a 29-31 record.

This one billion percent! I was the biggest hockey fan in the 80s and early 90s. They based slap shot on my hometown team. Once Bettman got in and turned out the old cold weather fans for the sun belt fans, I lost interest and never looked back.

There is a Wig connection here - teams used to have regular guys, some were farm kids from Canada, some were preppy fucks from Mass and Minn, a few Scandys with mad skills, even a few Ivans. Now they're all boring billionaires sleepwalking through the games while waiting to marry a Kardashian and drive their Lambroghinis around Beverly Hills. Fuck them all. At least Canada still has minors and Indy teams where the guys will chug a couple pints of Moose Piss with regular fans after the game. The NHL can fuck off...

It looks better to fans. It's that simple. Your way adds up to the same amount of points. But don't you dare bad mouth the Wings. They're America's team and Detroit is Hockeytown. Do you know the last time the Wings didn't make the playoffs? :grad:

They're doing what all professional sports leagues are doing. They're rigging the game in favor of scoring. And now since fighting is banned, you get a ton of cheap shots going back and forth and there is more obstruction and high sticks than ever before. Gotta stop a player somehow. I miss the days of the trap defense and an enforcer keeping opponents honest.
