Seriously, whats the given reason by "lawmakers"?

same question goes to weed too. Not one single death attributed to maragurana use.

STD's used to be fatal way back when, and thanks to new strains of superbugs, they're gonna be that way again.

They could easily tax prostitution if it was legal and regulated. That's exactly why pot is getting legalized.

i think its a matter of power: money is power. prostitution is a fast way to amass lot of money and therefore political power. the existing political powers refuse to permit a serious new contender to enter the arena. in those past societies in which it was legal it was always controlled by the primary religion, but in our society the primary religions cannot condone it so they exert their influence to insure nobody else can make a legitimate, legal claim to it.

i also think the same reason prevents drugs from going mainstream: after decades of wars on drugs it would be politically embarrassing to suddenly reverse things, and the existing parties refuse to let anyone else play in their playground

i've thought about this occasionally because i used to attend annual trade shows in vegas in the 1980s and 1990s. we used to have to arrange to have courtesy suites staffed in the hotels with hostesses and alcohol.. i found that, while making arrangements for cases of alcohol to be delivered to the suites, that for the shows every eligible girl in town was available for a price. not just the full-time hookers but the girls working the liquor stores, and the underground mall stores, and the card shops, and the coeds from U of N, were all available for hire.

its minimal compared to the profits themselves. those running the game would still take in the lion's share and therefore take over the govt.

If it was legal, those running the game would be the government wouldn't it?

and for fuck's sake, why don't we tax churches? if it's because of the first amendment then we need to amend that.

that's the fear: if it was made legal those running it would eventually take over because of all the power, money, and influence they would attract.
