Can we all agree being a "DJ" is bullshit and not really a thing?

So the guy that plays sampled tracks that people dance to, how is this cool again? Why are kids aspiring to do this bullshit that computer software could do? Why is being a DJ even a thing?

The guitar hero ep of South park sums this up well... We're in a society that lauds people for pretending to do shit

even the concerts the dipshits go to & pay a shitton for are all lip synching. They pay to watch an idiot dance & change costumes because the shit songs cant be replicated outside the studio.

It's cool since Las Vegas night clubs pay the top DJs $200k or more for one evening.

As Nick Cannon said on THSS, some DJs actually make their own mixes and get $$$$$$, while a 'personality' like Cannon gets a nice piece of cash, $40k for just being there.

I'll take $40k for a few hours of Djing and quit my current job right now.

Guess I'm waaaay old school because when I saw the title of this thread I thought it was referring to radio DJs (I still like 'em unless they're voice-tracked and not really in the studio, like most SiriusXM channels. When I don't want to hear any DJs and just the music, I simply go to my computer/ phone/ iPod, but sometimes I like hearing somebody there for in between the songs).

Make their own mixes? Like rip off everyone else and digitally splice the tracks together?

    Yes.

I believe that some are making enough cash that they are creating their own sounds.

Maybe back in the mid-80's, when hip-hop was coming into its own and the DJ actually added to the music by scratching, creating beats & original samples and mixed the sound of the band himself, it was at least a skill.

But these gross fucks today like Deadmou5 make me wanna puke. It's not all their fault, though. It's the masses of idiots who eat that shit up.
Drugs also have a lot to do with it. I can't imagine a stadium full of sober people paying $70 apiece to watch a guy hit a button on a laptop every 5 minutes for 2 hours.

    Everyone gets a participation medal.

You can "play the guitar" with a piece of plastic with buttons on it and some software.

Pushing buttons to play music and jumping around is now worth a lot of money for the top "DJ's".

    I'm seeing a pattern here.

This. It's actually not easy at all, IF you are actually "doing it". Like Night Ape said, mack when you were actually doing the scratching, creating the beats and samples and stuff, yeah, that's not easy. And what is done today electronically isn't that easy, to actually pick the music and DJ a big party and keep the crowd moving, to literally "work the mic" and keep a party going for hours is a friggin talent. Problem now is most of these big DJ's just pre-record everything in advance, then go in and hit the start button and the only work they do that night is grab the mic every now and then and scream something stupid.

I was in a band for 13 years, all our band equipment was set up and stored in my basement. I would sometimes take DJ gigs for weddings or parties because it was good money. But after several years I stopped doing it because party people suck and I didn't feel like putting in the actual work that it took to do it right. And to be that kind of DJ is a LOT of work.
