I have a 2004 Audi A4 convertible, it has 70,000 miles on it, and am being told it's time for a new timing belt, and new wheels, all in, it's like $5000!!!!!!
There are not a whole lot of this car to be had in my area, and I really love her, but is it worth it to get this work done??? Sell it? Run it to the ground? Wtf with Audi??
Btw this quote is from a European car fix-it guy, not Audi, where I fear it would be even more money!

Take it to another mechanic, maybe one outside the city and see if you get a different diagnosis/price.

I can see doing a timing belt if it needs it,but why wheels/rims or do you mean new tires.

...yes fix the timing belt. shop around for estimates, usually a well rated independent will be better than the dealer.

    Is it a 16 valve 4, or a 30 valve V6?

I had the 30 Valve V6 A6 and traded it in just before it was going to need a replacement. It would have been a fortune to replace!

Audi's are not cheap. I usually wait 100K to replace timing belts on my Toyota's. If it breaks the pistons will likely hit the valves and it will be super expensive to fix. I'd shop around. Sounds really expensive but sometimes timing belts are really hard to replace.

Timing belt yes, its scheduled maintenance. If it breaks the valves will hit the pistons and your engine is screwed. They will also replace the water pump at the same times but I would guess that's a $1500 job...tops. . I'm guessing that's the dealer's price? Find a small independent garege that specializes in VW's and Audi's, there's guys all over here in Ontario, probably the same where you live. Tires are so much cheaper in the US than here in Canada, cant imagine why this would cost $5000 check out Tirerack.com

Not really, the 4 is easier to work on! Like said above, try taking it to another independent guy that knows German cars and has good credentials. The part that's always a killer is the dealer parts are absurdly expensive. I was able to buy a warranty extension insurance that seemed like a waste of money for a few years. But then the front two CV joints needed replacement, then the water pump and radiator needed replacement. All covered and it saved us a ton of money, but we heard that after a certain mileage the car value nose dives, and we had it for 8 years anyways. So we cut it loose and bought the Skoda (part of the VW/Audi Group).

Are the tires worn out or just "aged"? All tires have wear indicators on the treads.

That is a fairly comprehensive service. And at least you know it will be done to Audi specs.
