My driver's side window no longer goes up and down when you press the switch. Its stuck about 3/4 closed. I got an estimate and they said $250+ for a new motor and regulator and $120+ for labor. All together it was like $ 405. Is this a fair price or should I get more estimates ? I cant do it myself because Im not mechanically inclined.

My 84 Audi 5000 window broke and at that time it cost me over $800, so $400 sounds good to me

It can be a tough job depending on the car. Get the part numbers and buy the parts online if you want to save money. Find a garage that will do it cheaper than $120.

buy a can of wd-40 lubricant, and spray liberally, you may need to remove the door cover to gain access...usually, the mechanism has fallen off track, and can be manually placed back on track, surely, you have 1 friend who is mechanically inclined...

Maybe the motor is bad but don't know why the regulator would have to be replaced.....I would check the continuity on the switch first...What kind of car?

...pull the window up and tap the switch to up, hopefully the regulator will move up and hold it there. its usually the regulators that break and there are probably forums and youtubes on how to fix it. switches and motors can go bad but switches are cheap for the windows and motors dont burn out that often. what year and make of car? you can google the question for your car and a forum will probably pop up where this has been discussed and a lot of times people post tutorials.

go to rockauto.com and order the part yourself

    then just pay for labor.

could save you a few bucks.

...if you shop rock auto you need to verify by part number. they sent me the wrong 02 sensor for my car even tho the generic search for my model recommended it. it was a bosch too. :bigcry:

could just be a loose nut behind the wheel

    check the muffler bearing

check the play in the cooter valve and make sure its properly lubricated

Pay the $405 or leave it an urban strip mall overnight & collect the insurance for any damages sustained if the vehicle is ever recovered.

$405's not too bad for a regulator and motor. However, if you or a friend can't do the work:

    1) DON'T buy the parts yourself. Most shops won't install parts carried in to them, as they can't warranty them and they do make a profit on the parts they sell, which is figured into the job.
    2) More than likely, all you really need is the regulator, but the shop is covering their own ass (as far as warranting the work) by replacing the motor also. If you want the job done once and done right, spring for the motor too. Otherwise, you may be able to save a few bucks by having a different shop replace only what is absolutely necessary, which is probably just the regulator.
