Video of the company's announcement last week to employees went viral on the Internet, showing emotional reactions to the loss of jobs while a representative of the company explained the move was "strictly a business decision." Carrier, a manufacturer of air conditioning units, is owned by United Technologies Corp and announced it would be moving 1,400 jobs to Monterrey, Mexico.
During Saturday night's Republican debate, Trump said if he were president, he would approach Carrier officials and give them two choices. "I'm going to tell them, 'Now I'm going to get consensus from Congress and we're going to tax you,'" Trump said. "'So stay where you are [in Mexico] or build in the United States.' Because we are killing ourselves with trade pacts that are no good for us and no good for our workers."

The old...."strictly a business decision" excuse. I'd love to see the wages and benefits they will offer in Mexico.

Put people out of work in exchange for cheap labor. It's the American way.

It only costs the American companies about $8 a worker in Mexico. Insane. Basically they hand out peanuts to the people.

Was hoping for more of a riot

I love it when the CEOs and CFOs tell hourly folks they are losing their jobs in order to protect the executives.

Companies are in business to make money. Our government imposes too many regulations, and it is a shame that people lose their jobs.

Funny that all these people want to come here and the jobs are going elsewhere.

So how do we compete with $8 a worker? Do we get rid of the minimum wage and any benefits to get in line with those countries? I know we talk about regulations and whatnot but this seems like a simple dollars and sense issue.

This move was to maximize profits for shareholders.

The government should impose a 50% luxury tax on anyone making over 10m annually. They could use some of that tax to bring the healthcare system up to a 1st world standard.

That means that have to keep paying dividends every year. The stockholders are all that matter to companies, not the people putting in their time and effort and expertise. What they don't realize is they lose customers to by their product the more and more people are driven into poverty and low wages.

Not true, if the other AC companies are built in the US it may influence them to buy American, but if this company can charge 30% less they can still make more profits because their production costs will be so low and people will buy it. Everything is corporate profits and greed and it's a vicious circle because now people have so little money to spend that they have to buy the cheaper stuff that is not made in America.

Do your very best to buy American, even if it costs a few bucks more. And hope the next President repeals these bullshit trade agreements.
