You had no intent to do anything other than pay for everything in your cart but later you realized they didn't ring you up for something.

    Consider

    - Your time has value too.

    - You didn't ask to be put in this situation.

    - Most likely, you've already given this business hundreds if not thousands of your dollars already (local grocery store, etc)

    - Most likely, you've been on the flip side more than once where you are overcharged or double charged for something and the store certainly doesn't initiate jack shit to fix that type of error.

    - Can you really say there isn't a difference between this and a shoplifter?

you think too much about issues that do not warrant it. retailers' margins are set to provide a cushion against shortages, accidental or intentional and, you still pay for groceries with cash? they must love you. you don't claim any cash back, and they probably don't even report the cash properly for taxes. if you still need to sooth your irrational feelings of guilt, donate an equal amount to a charity.

Depends when "later" is, and how much the undercharge was

    All your "excuses" are moot

Next thing ya know, you'll be standing outside ShopRite offering to buy food stamps for half price. It's a slippery slope.

I think this is one of those issues that demonstrates if you have character or not. When you do something that might cost you more to do the right thing but nobody would know if you didn't.

Having said that, if I'm right there, I'll point out the mistake. If I'm at home, I'll let it go. If it was some huge amount I might go back or make a call. I also would consider who it is going to cost. If my plumber or HVAC guy made a mistake in my favor, I'd definitely call him because he's an owner-operator of the business and the mistake would come directly out of his pocket. If it's wal-mart, I'm not going to worry quite as much but will still say something if I'm still in the store.

Considering often the cashier is responsible for mistakes in their drawer and it was a simple accident, I've always made them aware. All those things you listed seem like an attempt to justify what you already know is the wrong answer.

    I think he's saying what I said

If you discover a week later that you were undercharged 10 cents on a $500 item......would you go back and return the dime?

    I wouldn't :dontknow:

When I told the cashier and the manager at my local Home Depot that they charged me the 12 foot price for the 16 foot ladder they acted like I was an asshole so I dropped it. How could the computers be wrong? I'm not going to beg them to charge me more.
