Catcher in the Rye has always bothered me when Holden goes to the movie

And gets pissed at the woman who cries at the movie and seems sincere but is really a shitty person in real life.

That's the only thing that stuck with me about that book. I always feel like a fake person when I cry at a movie.

I thought all Jews loved rye bread. That must be one of those stereotypes.

Holden knows IRL she is probably mean and shushes her kid or snubs the help etc. yet gets all emotional and sentimental at some phony movie drama. The real world provides us with many opportunities to exhibit even a fraction of the compassion and kindnesses in small little ways each day. Don't be silly and sentimental for pretend things, be nice and show such good qualities as often as possible each day.

Also he knows she is crying for herself, ultimately. Just another form of selfish indulgence.

That's the crux of the character...he has ideals of how he, society, everyone should behave and be...but end of the day is just a mess like all of us.

Holden was the original Larry David. He had all these arbitrary rules for stuff that made a lot of sense on the surface but no one else knew the rules... Or they were just too stupid to follow them.

Read the book w/ the Curb theme in your head next time....
