    The woman that cheated death!

The back up teacher that was disappointed she wasn't selected, and then watched it blow up.

The backup teacher later became a qualified astronaut (instead of "teacher in space") and then flew on her own mission.

I was studying for my high school senior physics final. A lot of us speculated as to the reason and actually came up with the O-ring as a potential problem due to the cold weather. It wasn't until years later that I read about how bad the burn-through was.

At lift off note the gray plume of the burn-through. It then resealed itself for a while until throttle-up when there was maximum stress on the booster joints.

Note the plume - it then ended up burning through the external tank and...boom.

I know that WHO CARES, but: They named one of the library branches in my hometown (which was also her home town) after Christa McAuliffe. I thought that was a nice thing to do.

Just like 911, I slept through it all.

I didn't have a class that morning so I slept in, when I got up and switched on the TV, it was an hour after it happened.

I was riding with my family to my grandmother's funeral in Orlando. Watched it happen from the car.

Wasn't alive yet. But I still clearly remember the Columbia one in 2003. In class they pulled out tvs to watch news footage.

RARE! Space shuttle Columbia Explosion footage:

I was sitting at my desk at work, listening to the radio on my Walkman (!!).
    It was crazy.
I think someone eventually rolled a TV into the cafeteria and we watched the news there.
This was pre-Internet/pre-PC on the desk days.

The report said that a couple of people had switched to supplementary oxygen but that would have been cut off with the crew compartment's separation. Luckily they quickly went unconscious because that impact with the ocean was something like 200 mph.

I will always remember that day - Saturday morning, February 1st. Woke up, turned on the TV and thought "shit". Knew that there was a re-entry that day but didn't think much of it.

This woman was the stupid bitch that suppressed all efforts to know more about the foam strike, and was typical of NASA management at the time - they didn't learn their lesson from Challenger.

I'm still very sad as an aviation enthusiast and being connected to the industry, I never was able to see a launch or even a landing out at Edwards. But I have heard several sonic booms from their Edwards landings. I was once in Port Canaveral for a cruise and thought I would finally see a launch, but it was then delayed a week and I missed it.

I was already here living in Europe, my wife and I were with her friends doing wedding shopping. When we got back in the afternoon, I flipped on the TV and CNN and BBC were the only news stations on my cable, CNN was just showing the streaks and said the Shuttle is over due.

Was in a community college automatic transmission class with a teacher that was a BIG science geek. He had that on a TV in class. Was a very bad day.
