In Los Angeles, $2.7 million buys a 5,300-square-foot mansion in Hidden Hills; in NYC it gets you a compact, 1,100-square-foot two-bedroom apartment in SoHo.

Santa Monica ($997/square foot) and Beverly Hills and Bel-Air (both $941) are less than half the price per square foot of Greenwich Village ($2,576), Gramercy Park ($2,424) or Tribeca ($2,338).

While $2.4 million buys a large house in Santa Monica, it would get you only a 900-square-foot apartment in Greenwich Village.

And a $1.5-million house in Beverly Hills translates to a 642-square-foot apartment in Tribeca.

You can have ALL THE WATER YOU WANT! Come to Chicago and shovel our snow and send it back in tankers.

Never lived in NYC, but been lots of times and have friends.

An apartment in Manhattan is afforadable if you shoot for Clinton or Washington Heights or something not in a more gentrified area.

LA and suburbs are affordable - even within miles of famous piers. But good luck. Rolling blackouts, drought, ridiculous traffic - nothing is easy.

NYC has traffic, but it also has super systems of public transports to avoid sitting on a freeway. LA is choked. It has taken me an hour on the freeway to go two miles before.

California is a great state - along the coast, mind you, it sucks everywhere else - but there are too many people, too many problems. It is just not a good place to live and work if you want to have any money.

not sure if its changed much but i recall in the 1980s driving in LA in a convertible and realizing you can't drive with the top down as the sun is setting or the smog would get to you and give you migraines. never had that happen in nyc.

we will be skiing and then it will be back to 70F and all the fresh water you want. so much that we put out swimming pools on the side streets and roofs of NYC. We can get to our beaches without having to sit in traffic for 2 days to get 10 miles...

Best parts of LA > than any part of NY.

    Based on almost any criteria.

    Not even close.

it believing that gets you thru the day, sure.

you notice NYC people don't start threads like this ever? how come if LA is so great the people there feel the need to try to convince others of it so often?

It's not smoggy like that anymore. The vehicle smog check regulations really turned things around.

It is ridiculously expensive here, but San Fran is even worse. NYC probably still takes the lead, though.

Let's not get carried away. That's more of a May-September occurence (most years at least)
