    A woman driving on a Milwaukee highway was fatally shot Tuesday morning apparently by a child in the back seat, authorities said.

    The shooting on Interstate 41/U.S. 175 southbound happened at around 10:30 a.m., the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

    "Initial witness accounts indicate that a child in the back seat of the vehicle got a hold of a gun and discharged the firearm, sending a single bullet into the drivers back," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

    The woman, 26, had no pulse when first responders arrived and she was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff's office said. She was not immediately identified. The sheriff's office did not say the age of the child that fired or the relationship to the woman who was shot.

    A witness driving the other direction told NBC station TMJ that it appeared there was more than one child in the back seat.

    Last month, a Florida mom was shot as she drove by her 4-year-old son who was in the back seat, authorities said. Jamie Gilt, 31, was wounded by survived.

    She may have put the loaded .45-caliber handgun under the edge of the driver's side seat of the pickup truck she was driving, and the weapon apparently slid to the back where the boy was able to grab it and fire it, according to a police report. Gilt told investigators the vehicle she usually drives has items under the front seat that would prevent a gun from sliding back, according to the report.

    In December of 2014, a woman was fatally shot by her 2-year-old son inside an Idaho Walmart.

    The child apparently accessed a 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun located in a purse specifically designed to hold a concealed handgun, authorities and family members said at the time.
