Howard doesn't employ anyone that works for him. Sirius does. He's that cheap. Even the christmas party he takes sponsor money to pay for it. Not a marble comes out of his own "pocketbook".

I'm self employed. Times are tough. I'm just happy to make a living. No bonus for me.

My company does it's yearly employee purge in November/December. Around nov 1, you begin seeing emails from managers saying "soandso is no longer with the company. Their last day was yesterday. Please see bill/bob/Tom for further direction". The frequency ramps up by the first of dec, when they're almost daily. Then, around Xmas, they stop.

It sounds rough, but we have 10,000 people in the company. I'll probably receive 4-5 notices of people I interact with, and this year it was only contractors who's contracts weren't renewed. Nobody admits it, but I think that management is forced to get rid of a certain number of people that are below a certain line, to keep only the best performers.

Then comes January. Bonuses are typically 10% of your salary and grossed up, so that it's net 10% which is pretty boffo. They also give away a stock component to any professional I position or higher.

I'm self-employed now but I used to work for a company that was incredibly cheap.
One year we got a velcro wallet with a penny (!) in it - the CEO claimed it was a "good luck penny."
Another time we got copies of a book that the company had published. We were all like, wtf!
I sold my copy on Amazon for $50.

I have a friend who works for a big company as a secretary. They work her like a dog. But at Christmas she gets a nice bonus. Sometimes it's as much as 10,000.00 dollars. I'd like to see what the suits get there.

The best Christmas bonus I ever got was in '94 I think, because we had a good year in sales and the accounts had money sitting in them, the owner cut us all checks for the equivalent of our vacation time. So I got 2 weeks pay on top of my normal pay, a shame though, that next year I got bumped up to 3 weeks vacation. Too bad.

Aside for other jobs getting no bonus, I had one job that was notoriously cheap where the mother of the owner went around that afternoon and told everyone (about 15 of us) to don't eat lunch, that the company will be buying lunch. Finally, she called everyone into the office, that the food was here. There was 1 large Dominoes pizza and a 6 pack of Coke! Some of the guys thought it was a joke and laughed, when everyone realized it was no joke, almost everyone just walked out and got back to work shaking their heads.

Last year, my boss literally passed out a small candy bar to each of his employees as though it were Halloween. I gave him a $50 gift card. I think I got the worse part of the deal.

This year I grew the business by over $5 million per year at 30% margins and I "earned" a small trip to the grocery store (as did everyone else).

It wasn't uncommon, at one place I worked, for people to stay there 20-30 years. One guy was celebrating 60 years with the company. For this occasion, the owner bought a dozen doughnuts...

There were 75 employees in the company.

I've been on both sides of this fence...had one boss that walked around passing out envelopes with $500 cash to everyone (about 20 people...God Bless the Greeks).... Another guy in a meeting literally said, "keeping your job is your bonus"...then I was a director at a dotcom in 1999 and we planned a boondoggle to Vegas for about 40 people plus spouses/bf/gf etc and that turned into a cluster because then a few wanted extra money for baby sitters and dog boarding and stuff. We scrapped it and gave everyone $10,000 but the CFO was like Mr. Scrooge and wouldn't cut the checks until Jan 2nd. Glad they all cashed them because by April of 2000 the thing was bust.

There is no right way. Someone will always complain.

Have never received a bonus in my 25+ year working life. But I'm paid well so I'm not complaining.
