The first submarine in history to sink a enemy ship. 1864

"A century and a half after it sank and a decade and a half after it was raised, scientists are finally getting a look at the hull of the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley.

Last May, it was finally ready to be bathed in a solution of sodium hydroxide to loosen the encrustation. Then in August, scientists using small air-powered chisels and dental tools began the laborious job of removing the coating.

Now about 70 percent of the outside hull has been revealed."

It was speculated the crew ran out of air and died, but know after exposing the submarine, they think the crew was knocked unconscious by a shockwave and died.

The candle was to show how much oxygen was left. When it started flickering it was time to come up and open the hatch.
They would have had a pipe on their person, not be smoking it.

The sub sank a few times, killing multiple crews, including Hunley, its inventor and namesake, on training runs. It could easily have sunk on its own. It was made out of an old boiler. You'd have had to be very brave just to sit in it at the dockside with the hatch open.

The evidence about the shock wave killing the crew or sinking it due to being too close when the charge went off is just as tenuous as most theories about such things by historical experts. The guy found some copper on the spar (pole) the torpedo(bomb) was attached to. He therefore claims the torpedo must have been fixed to the Hunley's spar, rather than jabbed into the side of the wooden ship with a barbed point and detonated only when the sub backed off and pulled a cord attached to it. His theory would mean they exploded it when still right next to the ship. For all we know the copper could have been from one of several prior experiments on how to attach the charge, or a reinforcement, or part of the mechanism the torpedo was released from.

There were also various reports of sightings of the prearranged signal (two blue lights) from land, and even from the Housatanic itself. These would indicate it didn't sink immediately but signaled success on its way back.

2nd guy to the left looks like a slacker. No doubt all his fault.

I get that it was made out of an old boiler, but had they figured out a way to pedal it they would have gotten more speed out of it.

I always loved this story. I saw the Hunley in Charleston years ago. It had to be scary as fuck to have carried out that mission in that family size tuna can.
