When you get asked by the cashier at the grocery store to contribute to their charity ask them if the store is taking a tax credit with your money

    Do you

It used to be if you wanted to make money by shaking down people you would start a religion. I think now you start a 501(c)(3) org.

At my first post-college job, I had a manager who was relentless in soliciting for the United Way. Not a fan of that organization, or my manager's aggressive collection tactics :poke:

It's not a tax credit but a deduction. Also i suspect they pick up the donation as income so the deduction is legit. It's more of a PR thing. Don't see much of a tax benen for them.

No way ... not me. Little if any of the money goes where it's supposed to. Do you think NSAL is doing wonderful things? :dontknow:
I donate my actual time (and skill/knowledge/experience) to local entities who actually appreciate it. I do it because I want to help them. I do not write any of it off. I do not tell anyone about it (although I guess I just did ... doh!). And yes, I get a lot of satisfaction from it. fuck the Clintons, Sterns and all the rest of the ass holes bothering you at dinner time to try and squeeze you for money. :grad:

That is an interesting point about having to show the contribution as income also. I hadn't thought of that. If true, it makes the process legit.

I seem to recall that some years ago the top management got in big trouble for abusing funds. I remember this because (also years ago) I was a fishing guide up in Alaska and one of the clients one week was the CEO of the United Way. I didn't give it any thought back then, but now that I'm "wiser", I'm sure it was all paid for by graft. Keep in mind too that this was a very high end operation. It was over 25 years ago and the cost per person was $5,000/week. And that was from Dillingham, AK. I'm sure it cost at least another Grand to get from the lower 48 to Anchorage to Dilingham back then. :dontknow:

RE: Clinton Foundation, one side says 10% is being spent on 'life saving work', then I read this:
    • On February 18, 2015, The Washington Post reported that, "the foundation has won accolades from philanthropy experts and has drawn bipartisan support, with members of the George W. Bush administration often participating in its programs."
It shouldn't be so difficult to determine the actual facts of this, which is why I prefer small, local charities so you can actually see what the hell is going on.
