For Stephen Colbert and CBS, this wasn’t the game plan.

Because now…just three months after so much hype and so much love went into Mr. Colbert’s debut as the new host of Late Night, the former Comedy Central star has somehow fallen into 4th place where it matters most. In the all-important demo, he’s now being doubled up (and then some) by NBC’s Jimmy Fallon (outscored by 137 percent) and hasn’t beaten ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel in over a month. But here’s where CBS brass is likely doing a double-take: During the week of November 23-27, the 11:35 PM Late Show on CBS was beaten by Seth Meyers, who happens to be on one hour later (12:35 PM) on the Peacock.

Of course, these numbers regarding Colbert/Meyers came on a shortened week (November 23-27). So to avoid accusations of cherry-picking, here’s a trend worth noting since Colbert launched (via NBC):

In the prior 11 weeks since Colbert debuted, Fallon’s margins in 18-49 have been +28% for the week of Sept. 7-11, +38% for Sept. 14-18, +35% for Sept. 21-25, +41% for Sept. 28-Oct. 2, +38% for Oct. 5-9, +56% for Oct. 12-16, +54% for the encore week of Oct. 19-23, +59% for Oct. 26-30, +60% for Nov. 2-6, +70% for Nov. 9-13 and +79% for Nov. 16-20 (and +137% for Nov 23-27).

If there was ever an example of a trend, you just saw it. Then there’s this: Colbert’s numbers are down almost 45 percent since his debut week, and have only increased once week-to-week since the week ending on September 21st, trending downward slowly but consistently.

One more note: Colbert averaged a .58 in the demo in November (a sweeps month), a 16 percent rise over Letterman’s numbers last year. An improvement is always good news, but given Letterman’s decline at the end of his career (save for his final week sendoff), just 16 percent over a poor number and finishing 3rd or 4th can’t be what CBS thought it was signing up for.

But the program is still relatively new and still needs to establish its footing, right? Well, impressions are important, too. And it hasn’t helped that many perceive Colbert’s offering to be too political, too one-sided (primarily slanting left). As noted here a few weeks ago, a recent Hollywood Reporter poll of late-night viewers shows that only 47 percent of self-described Democrats watch Colbert, while only 17 Republicans say they do, or a 30-point spread. For Fallon, the spread is just five points (36-31 Democrats). For Kimmel, the spread is one (34-33). The perception of partisanship regardless of which way it leans, particularly when the primary brand is political satire as is the case with Colbert, is enough to help move the needle the wrong way. There’s also this factor: Fallon and Kimmel are very, very good at what they do and have enjoyed far more at-bats (as in years worth) than Colbert, who is trying to do this show without his old character but oftentimes falls right back into it.

CBS hired the 51-year-old to improve on Letterman’s ratings with younger audiences. The former Comedy Central host accomplished that nicely at first, but the numbers are either stagnant or sinking now. Other horses–even those racing one hour later out of the starting gate–are beating him now.

Is CBS happy with Colbert? Maybe.

Nervous is probably the better word to apply right now.

Colbert is slick, but goddamn, they are both dry white toast.
Also, Colbert's house band is corny art school shit, while The amazing Fred Armisen vanishing act is a continual disgrace to the Late Show.
And they both play garbage music.

Don't worry. Seth will probably be out the door in a year or two, so NBC is going to be looking to fill that slot with potential Tonight Show hosts.

How was hiring a 51 year old going to connect the show to younger viewers? I like the guy, but I can't do these Late Night shows, it's just an endless parade of boring celebrities pimping out projects.

Format is about as relevant as the Stern show nowadays. Nonetheless I find this a bit disturbing as Colbert used to make laugh and, more importantly, I have a deep seated hatred of that Falon fuck. That constant giggling, the forced enthusiasm...fucking ALL OF IT makes me sick. I really want him to catch the next train to dead.

I loved his Comedy Central show, hardly ever missed it. Now he wants to be everyone's buddy and not offend people. That's what that fuckface Fallon is for.

I think he can be really funny. But I hate this political crap. Especially since he's such a lefty. I want to laugh at night, not watch MSNBC. I liked when they hired him, but if this is the best he can do, they can't get rid of him soon enough.

He needs to host the show in full Strangers With Candy character. And then have those characters on routinely.

Even worse are the ratings over at Comedy Central. Daily Show's ratings are 40% lower after Stewart left and Larry Wilmore is down 55% from Colbert's numbers. The most recent weekly numbers are even worse.

    http://variety.com/2015/tv/news/late-night-ratings-stephen-colbert-jimmy-fallon-kimmel-1201656805/

Meanwhile, Comedy Central’s late-night pair — Trevor Noah at “The Daily Show” and Larry Wilmore at “The Nightly Show” — have suffered precipitous ratings tumbles in comparison with last year, when Jon Stewart and Colbert were sitting behind the desks of the programs in those time slots.

They play a commercial a lot for his show where he is so funny. He first says no commercials on Tuesdays. But is cut short then announces there will be more commercials instead.

    This is funny?

Fuck yes, a Colbert sucks thread!!! I loved the character, and watched the Report many years ago. The new show straight up isn't funny and I'm glad it's failing. Same goes for Wilmore/Daily Show. Hate what those shows became even before the new hosts took over, but they had a chance to go in a new and exciting direction. Instead they're unfunny preachy hypocritical garbage.
