Anyone dealing with this common core bullshit? Math is extremely simple for me (I was an engineer) however my kid's teacher just asked me to come in for a conference since she was "struggling" and using a "strange" method for subtraction. I almost lost it. I was working with my daughter because I saw her tests were weak. I showed her how to borrow numbers and it was so easy for her. Started passing all of her tests. At the conference they said she can't do that and they recommend a tutor, I told her my background and it quite easy for me to teach my daughter. She said no you need to know common core and the specialized version that we teach in our city. Then she went on the say, the problem is that no one else knows hey is old enough to teach it to her!!!!!!! I live in one of the top school districts in the country and this is the bullshit test taking knowledge that they are teaching.

I sat with the teacher twice, a half hour each and picked up the common core stuff, enough to explain homework at least. It is what it is.

have been very interested in this... can you share pictures of a few of the math problems that you don't like. And does she have a book explaining how to do it the common core way? pics of that too would be great. thanks.

Yes, that is exactly was it is for. You count and subtract on a number line by 5s,10s,100s until you get to the result. To me it appears to be created strictly to get as many kids as possible to pass a standardized test and that's about it. It makes all kids equally mediocre...

Up here when I was in school common core was they renamed remedial studies. It was the slow class.

Your choices were common core, general or advanced in each course.

but rather than a few kids hit the lottery, they should make reg schools more like charter shcools

One example. Just seems like a whole bunch of baby steps, while the borrowing method is much more efficient.. I'm glad I can afford private school, I never saw any of this with my boy.

I am a teacher. The problem that you (daughter) may (not sure how it is in your state) have with this strategy is that she will likely need to use the strategies that are embedded in Common Core to be successful in the state assessment that she might take.
For those interested, this is an excellent site that explains very clearly what Common Core looks like in the classroom in both ELA and Math.

1st thing I would do is subtract the 25 from 38 then subtract the 13 from 300..voila'
what should I name my method?

Make sure you monitor the problems given for homework on the web program they subscribe to. My son had a question that was a definite psycho-sociological question that had no business being in there.

I'll see if I can find it and post it, it was about how Americans should learn Spanish so that we can communicate with those who come here. they shouldn't learn English.

Common Core is dogshit IMHO. Remember the "New Math" from the early 70s? Jesus, it's like bored PhDs needed busy work so they cooked it up.

Stick with what's worked for generations. It's a fucking scam from Bill Gates and text book publishers.

I have NOTHING good to say about Common Core. The literature elements are even worse. Dumbing kids down to be machines in the workplace. LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS should be able to dream up their own curricula!
