I wonder how many shovels and large diameter PVC pipes/end caps were sold after that bill passed.

Yeah, this has become a problem in my state. I live in a rural area and my neighborhood is armed to the teeth. The street I live on could stand up to a foreign invasion.

    Rule number 1: Don't ask, don't tell.

Rule number 2: Ask, but I'm still not telling. Even a pretty please with a cherry on top won't work. So sorry. :D

They pulled that number out of their ass. I bet the real number is much higher. People who own an "assault weapon" tend to own more than one. Hell, they tend to own several. They collect them. Think of how many people moved into Connecticut before this dumb law. They brought their collections with them. They may have sold guns to others in private sales. Many residents might have bought guns out of state via private sales.

I might be leaving Ohio soon. I can legally bring my guns to the state I might be heading to. If just 1,000 people like me did the same, that's 40-50,000 guns that were never sent to any FFL in the state. Factor in decades and that number grows exponentially.

The Petit murders is what really kicked it off. It made the educated and the meek fearful, as well it should. A new crowd was introduced to the debate and took hold. Using Sandy Hook as a cause to make people feel safer is turning out to be a massive fail, as far as the states intentions go.

I used to live in Connecticut, I wouldn't be surprised if those numbers are accurate. I'm pretty sure CT had an "assault rifle" ban before the federal one went into effect, and was valid after the federal one sunset. The window to get one was comparatively low.

Leave it to the government to make otherwise legal, safe, and responsible gun owners felons by making a law the criminals would never have followed in the first place.
