He had an 11" knife and was running around threatening people he came across. He would not listen to the cops when they ordered him to put the knife down so they shot him. I personally feel cops should try to disable people by shooting them in the legs so they can get the time to jump them and arrest them. But not go for center mass first! That's fucked up.

NYPD officers shot and killed a man with a large knife who they were chasing near Times Square Saturday afternoon.Police said the man, who they observed smoking marijuana, became belligerent when officers approached him. He was shot dead after he threatened officers with the knife,
police said. The man had no identifcation on him, officials said. No officers were injured in the
incident, which took place over a number of blocks and ended with the
shooting at 38th Street and 7th Avenue, an area generally crowded with
pedestrians. Witnesses to the shooting described a chaotic scene in Midtown. "I was standing at the corner of 42nd Street and saw this guy running in middle of street, police chasing
him" said Edgar Delgado, who works in the area. "He had a machete type
knife. He didn't want to stop. Police told him to drop the knife. He
didn't. They shot him." A witness' cell phone video acquired
by NBC 4 New York shows police chasing the man along 7th Avenue and then
opening fire, shooting approximately 10 rounds. "It was scary because a shooting starts here someone could get hurt quickly," Delgado said.

...he had a knife apparently he threatened someone. there is a story on huffpo, ill go gitit!

NEW YORK — Police shot and killed a man they say lunged at them with a knife in a confrontation that began in Times Square and drew officers and spectators on a chase that ended with shots fired near one of New York's most crowded tourist areas.
The encounter played out Saturday around 3 p.m., when officers approached a 51-year-old man they say appeared to be smoking marijuana near West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue, in the heart of Times Square.
The man became agitated, pulled out an 11-inch knife and began to put a bandanna on his head, police said. He refused repeated orders to drop the weapon and began backing down the avenue, continuing for a number of blocks and drawing many officers into a slow-speed pursuit that took them south of Times Square.
According to the police account, officers pepper sprayed the man six times but he held onto the knife throughout the seven-block pursuit. At West 37th Street, he lunged at police and two officers shot him in the torso, police said. He was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.
Witnesses recalled a chaotic scene in which some bystanders took cover, while others began following the procession down the avenue in an attempt to capture cellphone video of it. On video obtained by NY1 cable news station, a number of officers, guns drawn, can be seen pursuing the man as he appears to skip down Seventh Avenue.
"He was swinging at people as he ran," Jobby Nogver, a 17-year-old visiting from Boston, told The New York Times. Nogver watched as police surrounded the man and fired. "I can't tell you how many shots," he said.
Priscilla Rocha, a tourist from Brazil, was visiting Times Square with her husband when they saw the confrontation.
"I almost had a heart attack," she told the Times. "Everyone started running."

Police shot and killed a man who threatened them with a large knife near Times Square Saturday afternoon. Officials said the man, who police observed smoking marijuana on 44th Street and 7th Avenue, became agitated when officers approached him. He then pulled out an 11-inch knife and raised it over his head. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon, but he refused, police said.
As the man backed down 7th Avenue, police pepper sprayed him six times to try and disarm him, but the man continued to threaten officers with the knife. Police said that as he neared the corner of 37th Street, he lunged at officers with the knife, forcing them to shoot him. Two officers fired a total of 12 shots, striking the man in the chest, groin, left arm and left calf.
The man was identified Sunday by police as 51-year-old Darrius Kennedy of Hempstead, Long Island

Police say Kennedy has 10 prior arrests, one of which resulted in him being hospitalized for a psych evaluation in October of 2008, after police took him into custody for knocking garbage cans over in Times Square. In November of 2008 Kennedy was arrested for threatening motorists and cops with a screwdriver on Broadway and West 66 street, police said.
No officers or bystanders were injured in Saturday's incident, which took place in an area crowded with pedestrians.
Witnesses to the shooting described a chaotic scene in Midtown.
"I was standing at the corner of 42nd Street and saw this guy running in middle of street, police chasing him" said Edgar Delgado, who works in the area. "He had a machete type knife. He didn't want to stop. Police told him to drop the knife. He didn't. They shot him."
A witness' cell phone video acquired by NBC 4 New York shows police pursuing the Kennedy along 7th Avenue and then opening fire.

    Fucking pussy pigs......

One guy with a knife versus 10 or 15 guys with high school educations and a worthless badge.

Did they ever hear of mace, a net gun, or rubber bullets?

in a crowded area such as Times Square, there is no time to wait for ESU to arrive to apprehend an EDP with a machete. Isolate and contain is the first option, and clearly, that was not a possibility.

mace did not work, the article states.

had the machete killed someone, people would be saying quite the opposite. They followed procedure. They shot to stop him, not to kill him. he died. :dontknow:

I get that, However, it doesn't change the fact that NYC is almost under marshal Law.
