The cast of coach in 1996, from left: Jerry Van Dyke (Luther), Clare Carey (Kelly), Craig T. Nelson (Hayden), Bill Fagerbakke (Dauber) and Shelley Fabares (Christine). So far, Nelson is the only actor confirmed to be returning for the new season.
Craig T. Nelson is returning to the sidelines for a new season of the '90s sitcom "Coach."

NBC brass said the 70-year-old actor will reprise his role as D1 football coach Hayden Fox in a story that picks up around two decades after the original show ended.

"Coach Hayden Fox, in the present day, has retired from coaching. He is called back to become assistant coach to his own grown son, who is the new head coach at an Ivy league school in Pennsylvania that is just starting up a new team," NBC said, according to EW.com.

The show's 13 episodes will be shot in traditional multi-cam style, is being headed up by original executive producer Barry Kemp.

There was no word on whether co-stars Jerry Van Dyke, who played defensive coordinator Luther, Bill Fagerbakke, who played jock doofus Dauber, or any other original cast members would return for the new show.

Nelson recently ended a successful run playing family patriarch Zeek Braverman on NBC's "Parenthood."

News of the return of "Coach" comes days after Fox announced it would be reviving another '90s hit show, "The X-Files," for a six-episode miniseries.

Is Hollywood officially out of ideas? Every new show is either some superhero crap or a remake of something else.

I hear X Files is coming back though.

For fuck's sake. They must be jumping on the American Horror Story bandwagon. "Coven" was the worst season too.

I saw a taping of Coach in like '93.
I was a fan. Hope reboot doesn't suck.
Cool to find out Bill "Dauber" Fagerbakke voices Patrick Starfish.

I hate how it's no longer reboots or sequels, but hybrids where you get 10-15% original cast as a sequel to ca$h grab the geezers & the rest is all new players for the teenage buck, with tons of nods to the original scattered about.

See: the new Terminator, the new Vacation, the new Star Wars

Oh, and I always disagree it's an "out of ideas" thing. It's a money thing. People don't create a box office smash out of indie films with original ideas, but they eat up shit like the new Terminator or Ghostbusters because they're established franchises and they're more inclined to waste their dough on something vaugely familiar to them, out of pure curosity even thoughpretty much everyone knows going in it will suck.

While it would've, that kind of thinking is ultimately the problem.

They know how to pique at nostalgia to grab that cash.

Coach was my favorite show (until they moved to Florida.)

Scenes with Hayden and Stuart were funnier than Archie and the Meathead. Here is Hayden and Stuart meeting for the first time.
