TransAsia flight clips highway, crashes into Taiwan river (HD)
    NY Daily News

A hasty TransAsia pilot accidentally turned off the plane’s working engine after the other failed — forcing the jet crash into a Taiwan river, killing 43 people.

The pilot of doomed TransAsia Airways Flight GE235 said, “Wow, pulled back on the wrong side throttle” just seconds before it plunged into the water, a preliminary investigation showed.

The Feb. 4 crash killed 43 of the 58 people on board, including the pilot and copilot. Dramatic footage of the accident showed the descending plane strike a taxi on a Taipei highway before splashing into the Keelung River.

Minutes after the ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft took off from Taipei’s airport, one of its engines went idle, the report showed. The plane is designed to run on just one engine.

But the pilot — who was not named in the report — pulled back on the throttle of the wrong engine. Instead of turning off the non-working engine, he cut power to the functioning one, according to the report.

The pilot, a former Taiwan Air Force flyer, failed a flight simulator test in May 2014, but retook it and passed a month later, investors said.

His colleagues called him “nervous” in post-crash interviews. During flights, he “had a tendency of rushing to perform the procedures without coordination with the (co-pilot),” another pilot said.

After the crash, the pilot was initially dubbed a hero because he avoided smashing into buildings by flying the doomed plane into the water. On the way down, a plane wing clipped a taxi, but no one in the car was hurt.

The pilot of doomed TransAsia Airways Flight GE235 turned off the wrong engine, forcing it to crash, investigators said.
The flight, heading toward the outlying Taiwan-controlled islands of Kinmen, was carrying 53 passengers, three crew members and two flight attendants.

Fifteen people escaped the craft alive.

The preliminary report makes no recommendations. A final report is expected in April 2016.

The 64-year-old airline had no immediate comment on the Aviation Safety Council’s findings, but a company publicist said officials may make a statement later Thursday. Another domestic TransAsia flight crashed on July 23 last year, killing 48 people aboard.

I wouldn't be too hard on the guy. Since he was from Taiwan, he probably never heard the term Oopsie Daisy.

At that moment he knew he was going to die, that's a remarkably controlled reaction.
