Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said Sunday that he would filibuster any name President Barack Obama put forth to replace Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Cruz has said that Obama should not nominate a candidate to replace Justice Scalia, who died this weekend. Obama said that he would submit his nomination "in due time."

George Stephanopoulos asked Cruz on ABC's "This Week" if he would filibuster Obama's nomination.

"Absolutely. This should be a decision for the people, George. We've got an election," Cruz said. "And, you know, Democrats -- I cannot wait to stand on that stage with Hillary Clinton or with Bernie Sanders and take the case to the people, what vision of the Supreme Court do you want?"

"Let the election decide it," Cruz continued. "If the Democrats want to replace this nominee, they need to win the election.

Yes the Supreme Court should be put on hold for a year because Ted Cruz says so.

Fine. I say make him do it. I'm not taking about the fake filibuster threat that everyone backs down to. I say make him get up there on the Senate floor and personally hold up the Govt. Because his recent history of threats to do it have worked out so well for him. The guy has been too busy campaigning for a job he will never get for the last two years to actually do the job he was elected to do. I don't see him leaving the campaign trail to pitch a fit on the Senate floor for days on end.

If this sounds like a dumb question, I'll cop to it -- but this is something puzzling to me:
why are elected officials allowed to effectively desert their roles to run all over the country campaigning for another job?
I don't think my employer would like that too much.
Wouldn't it make much more sense -- and force politicians to really put their money where their mouths are -- to make it law that they first have to step down from their positions before they announce a run for another office?

Not when they know they are going to lose and only doing it to try and raise their profile in the Senate to try and up the quality of their donors
