I decided my knowledge of Cuba was limited to the Godfather and Scarface movies so I decided to some quick reading on what was really going on.

    1. Castro took over Cuba because the country was basically owned by a few rich families and U.S. corporations.
    2. The rich folks fled first in the 1960s, then the small business owners 70s, then the poor 80s
    3. The embargo is placed to weaken Castro but the real reason is to protect Florida businesses agriculture and tourism from cheaper products and services.
    4. The rich Cubans who settled in Miami hated Castro because he stole their wealth and had big sway over Florida politics and electoral votes in Presidential elections.
    5. Carter and Clinton both wanted to lift the Embargo but Clinton was bullied into signing a bill giving Congress that power which he claimed was good Florida politics.
    6. Obama now makes the strong effort because the anti-Castro Cuban vote in Florida is much less than it used to be with poor Florida Cubans now siding with Democrats.

Whatever happens next in Cuba is all about money. Having a country 90 miles offshore of the U.S. not subject to strict U.S. laws will have businesses lining up to get into Cuba.

Good write up, fun fact, my grandfather was on vacation in Cuba, gambling the day the revolution began, it took them 6 days to get the hell out of there....Starwood hotels went to Cuba with Obama this week, building will commence shortly...give them 5 years to be the shithole the Dominican Republic has become....

It also has a little something to do with the Castro brothers being murderous thugs second only to possibly North Korea when it comes to brutally repressing a majority of their population. Trust me, there have been no "rich Cubans" fleeing to America since well before the Mariel boatlift.

I love those old clips of JFK calling Cuba, "Cuber" :giggle:

The Bautista regime that preceded the revolution was also corrupt as fuck, repressive, and in the pocket of the Mafia. It was a stereotypical "banana republic"

Fun fact: Concentration camps were invented and used by the Spanish against the Cuban population just prior and during the Spanish-American War :grad:

America used to have this very close, paternal, yet condescending and weird relationship with Cuba, especially around the time of the Spanish-American War. I never understood why the US was so supportive of Cuban independence (which was the correct course) in the wake of defeating Spain, yet kept the Phillipines as a territory, repressed their independence movement, and savagely fought a bloody Philippine guerilla movement for years (that hardly anybody knows about)?

The rich Cubans fled to FL right after Castro took power. But you need to ask this question - Why did Castro come to power? Most likely because of the huge amount of poverty that existed pre-Castro.

Yes, before communism you had the government, the rich people and the poor people. After communism, you have the government and all the people who are now equally destitute, more or less.

Another great victory for statism - social justice achieved by making everyone equally miserable.

It's about banking. Cuba itself has embargoed the IMF even after the end of the Cold War. We do a lot of business with brutal dictatorships all over the world but they accept loans from the IMF.

I'm glad Obama is normalizing relations with Cuba the Cold War ended already

Or creating a new trade partner to accept and buy our exports. The Cuban people would like new fords and dodges and coca cola.
