On Tuesday, Joey Sanchez stepped up to the counter of Leon’s Frozen Custard, a 70-year-old Milwaukee staple, and listened to the customer in front of him place his order in Spanish.

The shop is located on the city’s south side, in a neighborhood with a large Hispanic population. Sanchez thought nothing of it. Then he heard the server’s response.

“She whispered to him in Spanish, ‘I’m not allowed to speak Spanish to you,’ ” Sanchez told TV station Fox 6 Now. Sanchez was shocked.

He posted his experience to social media, WISN 12 News reported, and soon the community was rallying around what critics called a racist — and illegal — employee policy. Customers on Twitter used the hashtag #BoycottLeons. And the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has even called on the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to launch a federal investigation into the “English only” rule.

Seems like creating a problem where there is none.

If you don't like the policy go,somewhere else, if the place is in a Latino area it's probably not the wisest business move ever made.

"I have to speak the official language of the country I'm in if I expect people to understand me?!"

Every small business should be required to have a team of interpreters on staff to accommodate non-English speaking customers :grad:

I was just at the NJ DMV this week. They require you to answer their questions to you in English and not use a translator. They sent a Russian woman away because she didn't speak English and couldn't use her son to translate.

same here. There is no way liberal Evanston would disallow speaking Spanish.

I went to Leon's a couple of years ago on the advice of friends. It looks like a dump and it seems like the staff are incapable of quickly dishing up a custard. Kopp's is the place to go. It's packed and you still get your custard in minutes. They also have great hamburgers.

Milwaukee is a funny place, almost like a land time forgot. No one worries about things like high fat, alcohol consumption or personal grooming. I cross the Illinois-Wisconsin border and feel like a model. It can be a lot of fun and the people are nice.

    Green Bay sucks...always!

At my supermercado the Mexicans all speak English.
Food is inexpensive and you can get a lot of good stuf like pablanos that the big chains dont carry.
