My cable bill is running up near $200 a month and I'm getting a little butthurt about the whole thing... the building I'm in is stuck with Time Warner, so I'm kind of hand cuffed at the moment, but I'm curious about alternative content outlets. My parents have Amazon Prime and a Roku, but all the content on those outlets seems old. I don't know much about Hulu... I do know I need live NFL. What is the ideal balance/set up to use the net and the over air HD digital channels to cut the cord? TIA
I'm not very technical... but I'm interested. Not looking for torrents or anything... my TV use is very basic. I want to watch sports and not pay for the Oprah network. Is that possible?
Damn I cancelled my cable when it got to $149 a couple years ago. I just watch the internet anymore, Foghorn
When is there going to be a service that lets you choose you channels a la cart. Seems like most people would jump at the chance to do that.
I'll tell you right now, reliably watching HD sports live is gonna be trouble. I've tried many ways to make it happen and it's either shitty quality or hard to find.
I know, it sucks... my unit in this building faces north so satellite isn't an option. Went thru a lot of shit with the recent Time Warner/CBS blackout and I'm trying to be done with it... of course, any change I make would require TW internet, so maybe you're right, I'm just fucked.
I spend over $200/mo on cable just to appease the fam. I watch almost everything (live programming excluded) exclusively over the net at my leisure.
Lots of lobbyists standing in the way of that... from what I've learned/heard a channel like ESPN costs a cable provider about $5 a month to re-transmit the signal to their subscribers... a good chunk of that fee goes to fund the Bravo's and CMT's and shit everyone scrolls across on their menus to subsidize that "400 channel line up" carrot they wave in front of everyone that signs up for the "basic cable" package. The recent CBS thing brought it out in the open... there has to be a way via the internet to watch what you want to watch and ditch all these parasitic networks.
What ive done last 2 yrs. Keep limited basic Feb thru Sept $15+ a month. Gets me hd channels on all TiVos only limited locals. If u cut cable all the way with Comcast , internet is $10 more anyway so no need to cut it all the way. End of august I call for a promo due to football season coming up, I need ESPN, pac12, NFL. So I call and I got digital preferred for $20 more per month for 6 months. That's all good cause come Feb I cut anyway. I don't need cable TV really outside of football. So non football season $50 hsi $15 limited basic cable. = $75 after taxes. Football season, get dit, food channels etc $95-$100 month. Netflix for the kiddos $9 month all year. This is on Comcast 2+ years working out well.
just bought one of those google chromecast dongles to project netflicks from my phone to my TV. works pretty sweet.. other than that I pretty much pay $90 a month to watch live Giants games and the NFL
