Director Danny Boyle says original ‘Trainspotting’ stars Johnny Lee Miller (l.), Ewan McGregor (2nd from l.), and Ewen Bremmer (r., pictured with Kevin McKidd) are all expected to reprise their roles for a sequel.
Academy Award winning director Danny Boyle is ready to return to the scene of his greatest crime drama.

Boyle revealed to Deadline.com that his next project will be the long awaited sequel to his 1996 breakthrough, "Trainspotting."

"All the four main actors want to come back and do it," Boyle said of "Trainspotting 2" at the after-party for his Telluride Film Festival screening of "Steve Jobs." "Now it is only a matter of getting all their schedules together which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series."

Original cast-members Robert Carlyle ("Once Upon a Time") and Jonny Lee Miller ("Elementary") are the ones locked into TV commitments, and lead actor Ewan McGregor's schedule is of course perpetually packed. Ewen Bremner rounds out the returnees.

Scottish author Irvine Welsh, who penned the acclaimed 1993 novel on which "Trainspotting" was based, also wrote a 2002 follow-up called, "Porno."

Boyle speaks during a seminar in Elks Park at the 2015 Telluride Film Festival on Sunday.
That novel centered around the exploits of McGregor's Renton and his estranged pals ten years after their heroin-addled exploits in the original.

Getting McGregor to reprise his role seemed to be one of the biggest stumbling blocks, particularly because of the actor's long-simmering resentment with Boyle after being passed for the lead in 2000's "The Beach" in favor of Leonardo DiCaprio. Boyle has since publicly apologized for the slight, though, and the main issue now seems to be the shadow of the first "Trainspotting."

" I think it would be interesting to do that, get everyone back together again," McGregor told the Daily News in 2012. "But it would be a great shame to make a sequel that that doesn't do the original justice ... I would have to see a script and see what I felt about it."

Boyle told Deadline.com that it was returning screenwriter John Hodge's script for "Trainspotting 2" that got the four leads to agree to return.

I'm still waiting for Guy Ritchie to do the RocknRolla sequel that was promised in the end credits of the first.
