Apparently this woman in the white Volvo crossed over the highway into oncoming traffic. You would think the driver in the Jeep Wrangler bought it but it was the woman who caused the accident in first place. She was wearing a seatbelt but it made no difference. The truck driver with dashcam got really lucky to avoid the accident. Don't know if I would have reacted that quickly.

This shocking dashcam footage shows the moment a car careered across a highway in Delaware before colliding with four other vehicles, killing the driver.

Sarah Baird, 62, lost control of her 2001 Volvo S60 and spun across into the opposite lane of the Del 1, smashing into oncoming traffic.

Ms Baird, who was wearing her seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, while her 63-year-old male passenger survived and is recovering in hospital.

A woman driving a Chevrolet and towing a horse trailer tried to avoid both collisions but smashed into Baird's spinning Volvo.

Brandon Cooper, who was driving the Jeep, climbed out of the wreck moments before it caught fire.

He and Kelli Amaya, the driver of the SUV, were taken to hospital. The other drivers and the horse were not injured.

Mr Noval said he was lucky to avoid colliding with any of the other cars during the horror crash,

'I was just trying to avoid whatever I could so that I didn't make it any worse than it already was,' he said.

'If I would've hit the trailer and the truck, there would've been more causalities,' he added.

The road was closed for more than three-and-a-half hours.

    Delaware State Police is investigating.

Is it bad my first concern was hoping that the horse was ok?

    1. Older Volvo

    2. Got double t-boned, had she hit him head on it might have been different

    3. Looks like it might be their 2 door hard top convertible version, and convertibles are notoriously weak in the sides due to the chopped top.

Cool thing about new Volvos, they are designed to divert the force to the side and shear off the wheel so it doesn't get shoved into the driver compartment. They basically just side-step the crash. I think the XC90 was the top rated vehicle in the European testing.

Christ, that's horrible. I wonder what happened that she came over like that. Heart attack or something?

Honestly it doesn't take much at 70mph. Fiddling with a phone or stereo, drop a wheel onto a low shoulder, then the typical driver's total lack of emergency maneuver skills takes over and they over-correct into a slide. She somehow managed to take a car equipped with stability control and ABS sideways, which takes some aggressive jerking of the wheel and braking I'd say.

My wife rents cars on business trips all the time and comments on how lousy even "sporty" crossovers and midsize sedans (Altima, Camry, etc) handle compared to a real sport sedan. This older Volvo, if an S60 and not an R model (it wasn't) would be pretty much like a soft Camry or Malibu in handling). The safest form of safety is active safety, where you avoid the impact in the first place.

she was doing a quick game of soduku before drifting across the lanes

I'm always telling my grandma to not play soduku and drive

it is a real problem with the older generation.

they love their world and number puzzles

I saw a demo of foamed aluminum a few years back. The energy absorption is amazing. You'll see this in crumple areas of vehicles in the near future.

Technology is so complex and amazing these days. It makes one realize what a dullard he is really compared to these people who create such things. The technology behind anti-tank weapons that used shaped charges (been around nearly 100 years but highly refined today) is mind blowing. They can make things explode so quickly and in such precise way that a jet of liquified copper (or other metal) can blast its way through a foot of hardened steel armor.
They have now designed them to fly over a tank and shoot the charge downward into the thin top armor. Imagine the timing necessary for it to all go right.

My father in law has some game like that he plays on a little handheld thing. Since he started losing it a year or so ago that's all he does all day.

That's the correct coast for South Florida, from what I hear. I can attest that Palm Beach county is no prize unless you're Howard or Rush.
