The comic began his set to wild applause from the crowd at the Comcast Theatre in Hartford, delivering an opening routine which candidly addressed changes in both pop culture and himself, since his 2005 split with Comedy Central and subsequent disappearance from the mainstream.
However, several audience members became increasingly disruptive, which visibly bothered Chappelle, and the comedian put his act on hold in an effort to quiet the vocal audience members. This lead to more hecklers joining an increasingly loud crowd, which resulted in Chappelle abandoning his material and sitting quietly on a stool in the center of the stage, explaining that he had been contracted for a 25-minute performance and he would simply wait for the time to be up and then leave.
True to his word, amidst more boos and heckles from an increasingly angry audience, Chappelle put down his microphone and left the stage, indicating he would “never come back here [to Hartford].â€
Hartford Police dispatched extra patrols to the Comcast Theatre as a precaution.

NO - that is douchey. People paid money and looked forward to seeing him perform. The venue should have escorted those people out. I went to see the Who this past year and I think it is was the first night of their tour. The sound wasn't right or whatever, there were problems. Pete Townsend walked off the stage after a couple of songs and never came back out. I was really disappointed and had spent quite a lot of money to be there.

I remember seeing Chappelle at The Borgata years ago... at one point, he said he was now going to explain what happened with the show and Comedy Central and his thinking. I can't remember one word he said, but I remember saying how convoluted it was. It made zero sense, though he really seemed like he believed in what he was saying, it just made no sense.

Luckily, the rest of the show was very funny.

agree. that's diva bullshit. they should make every effort to put on the full performance. people paid to see them, so it's pretty fucked up they can just quit because they got butthurt. i thought dave was better than that. what a baby.

I loved his comedy central show but Dave I saw him recently and he had ZERO material. The crowd I was in turned on him because he had no material. This plays in a comedy club where the price is 10-15 bucks, not $50 theater tickets. I'm no longer a fan after that. You come with material and get people laughing they'll stop heckling. And fuck whoever said he hates white people his partner writing the Chappelle show was white.

Keenan Ivory Wayans did this years before Chappelle. Luckily he's still a huge star too.

One of Dave's rambling explanations for running away from the comedy central show was that he had an epiphany that whitey was laughing at black people and not the jokes.
Has Dave even spoken to Neal Brennan since he ditched the CC show?

Enough with these comedians who get popular and then think they don't have to have an act. Like just showing up and talking about nothing is enough for your money. Dice did it too....all of a sudden, the audience that loved him and made him famous for his dirty nursery rhymes, were now the enemy when they'd call out for him to do them. So he'd go on stage with no real material and rant about shit. It worked in small doses, like on The Day the Laughter Died, but then it got tired. I went to see Sam Kinison around 1989. He was late. Not on his game. And fighting with the audience. At one point he yells at some guy, "Do you think you could let me get through one fucking bit????" It's a combination of a performer who's not on top of things and morons in the crowd who are drunk and think they're part of the show. Most clubs will toss hecklers pretty quickly, and I applaud that. I'm not there to hear those assholes.

But some of these guys have to come with some material. Otherwise an audience will turn on you...quickly! Walking off stage for a paying audience is inexcusable.

    Dave converted to Islam.
Shuli's Jew material might rub Chapelle the wrong way.
