Mayor Bill de Blasio and boycott-urging Queens councilman fed up with Chick-fil-A Chick-fil-A has opened two outposts in Manhattan and is reportedly planning a new location in Queens this fall, but city councilman Danny Dromm and Mayor Bill de Blasio and are speaking out against the chain, because of a top exec’s public stance against same-sex marriage in 2012. The chain, which confirmed to us recently that it plans to operate 10 to 12 eateries in the metropolitan New York City area by 2017, is reportedly looking to open up one in Queens at the Queens Center Mall. Dan Cathy, who was vocal about his opposition to gay marriage, and to a charity linked to the restaurant which donated money toward thwarting LGBT rights. Mayor Bill de Blasio, asked about the issue at an unrelated press conference Tuesday, also expressed displeasure about the chain’s presence, but said they have a right to be in the city. “What the ownership of Chick-fil-A has said is wrong....I’m certainly not going to patronize them and I wouldn’t urge any other New Yorker to patronize them. But they do have a legal right," de Blasio said. Through a spokeswoman, the company issued a statement to New York Business Journal about the elected officials' remarks: "The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender," the statement said. "We are a restaurant company comprised of 80,000 individuals who represent different backgrounds and beliefs, and we are all focused on offering great food, service and hospitality."
