Why am I seeing them on every other street? Are they committing mass suicide? Maybe the economy has them too depressed to take another winter. WTF?

I saw one fall out of a tree the other day and land right in the street. I assume it was dead.

Its like they lay on their back and pull the trigger in the middle of the street. What message are they trying to send.

I'm tired of swerving into oncoming traffic to avoid bloody fur on the tires.

if you consider they are essentially rats with cute ears and fuzzy tails, you won't work so hard to swerve

Happens every year. They're in a frenzy storing food for the winter. They bury food as well as store it in trees. They're so busy running around they don't take the time to look both ways. They zip into the street to be met by an untimely end. Poor squirrels. :sadbye:

If you play in front of a moving car, you're asking for trouble.

I'm not a big fan or squirrels. Bird feeder robbing little bastards! But I did learn that squirrels hate a greasy pole. ( figure that one out ladies.)
My bird feeder that is on the pole they'd just climb right up it. Until I greased it. But the last time I greased my pole, I used Vicks Vapo Rub. And those little bastards won't touch that shit.

But one thing I've noticed since moving to NY, and this is the honest truth. Now we don't have these in this part of the state. And I had never seen anything like it anywhere in the USA. But the closer you get to NYC, the more black squirrels you see. Black squirrels. I've been to or through almost every state, and I'd never seen a black squirrel.

    There aren't any in Minnesota.

As a melanistic variety of the eastern grey squirrel, individual black squirrels can exist wherever grey squirrels live. Grey mating pairs may produce black offspring, and in areas with high concentrations of black squirrels, mixed litters are common.[1] The black subgroup seems to have been dominant throughout North America prior to the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century, since their dark colour helped them hide in virgin forests which tended to be very dense and shaded. As time passed, hunting and deforestation led to biological advantages for grey coloured individuals.[2][3][4] This is likely due to the significantly increased cold tolerance of black individuals which lose less heat than greys.[5] Black individuals also enjoy visibility advantages in denser northern forests.[1] Today, the black subgroup is particularly abundant in the northern part of the Eastern Grey Squirrel's range.
Large natural populations of black squirrels can be found throughout Ontario, and in several parts of Maryland, Michigan, Indiana, Virginia, Wisconsin and Ohio.[6] Populations of grey squirrels in which the black subgroup is dominant can be found in these six areas as well as in smaller enclaves in New Jersey, southern New York, Illinois and Connecticut.[7] Outside areas of North America where black squirrels occur naturally in abundance, there are several notable introduced populations of Black Squirrels:

we had mostly brown Fox squirrels where I grew up in North Dakota -- I don't recall ever seeing a gray squirrel before I came down to Minneapolis -- gray squirrels seem to be predominant here, though there are pretty brown ones as well
