The more I google, the more confused I am. Anyone in here defaulted on a student loan? My balance is $20k and could use some advice. I have to choose rehabilitation or consolidation by tomorrow. :nocheer:

Depends on if you work and your income stream. You most likely can consolidate with a freeze in payments if you are out of work.

Fed loans can't be bankrupted upon, so you're on the hook forever, and they'll garnish your wages.

I'm not 100% on it, but i think rehab is only kicking the can. And as the can is kicked, that interest compounds.

If you're young, don't worry about your credit score. It only goes back 7 years. Do what is easiest for you to make it from day to day.

I'm 35 and the loan has been in default status for 8 years. I now owe $20k for $13k in loans. I work for the State of Nevada though and I'm just reading about 'Public Service Loan Forgiveness' where the debt is wiped after 10 years of payments. I just don't want to agree to pay $210/month if it can be lower. So stressed! Thanks for your replies though :)

Republicans want to steal from the poor and give to the rich.

Is it wrong that I secretly don't want my kids to go to college because I don't think it's worth it in the long run? I would never deny them but I'd be relieved if they just decided to get a job instead.
