'Green Acres' actress Mary Grace Canfield dies

    Feb. 17, 2014, 8:19 PM EST

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Mary Grace Canfield, a veteran character actress who played handywoman Ralph Monroe on the television show "Green Acres," has died. She was 89.

Her daughter, Phoebe Alexiades, says Canfield died of lung cancer on Saturday at a hospice in the California coastal town of Santa Barbara.

Canfield had appearances on a number of TV shows during a four-decade career, including "General Hospital" and "The Hathaways." She was Harriet Kravitz on four episodes of the 1960s series "Bewitched."

But she was best known for her role of Ralph Monroe in some 40 episodes of "Green Acres," which ran from 1965 to 1971.

Monroe greeted folks in the town of Hootersville with a cheery "howdy doody," wore painters' overalls and was forever working on the Douglas family's bedroom with her brother, Alf.

The guy who played Sam Drucker died just 2 years ago. I would have thought he was in his 70's when the show was still on the air.

Damn! He was born in 1915 so he was only in his 50's when the show was on

I saw one Beverly Hillbillies the other day where Mr. Drysdale mistakes a chimpanzee for one of his secretaries because he hears all of this fast typing in the next room.

Leave it to Beaver's getting bad on MeTV. This morning Eddie dropped out of high school and Beave's getting a bad teenage mustache. It goes on for a "whole nother" season after this, too. I just looked at the episode guide and there's one in the last season that I really need to see called "Don Juan Beaver."

Best was the last few seasons in the late 60's when the writers said fuck it and must have started smoking herb and dropping acid.

Those later episodes are hilarious. Mr. Douglas is the straight man to an entire world of lunatics.
