Disney Confirms Plans for Han Solo Spin-off Movie

Character will get his own film, set for release in 2018
The first film in the new Star Wars franchise isn’t even out yet, and already details are emerging about more of them.

On Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, the duo that directed The Lego Movie, are working on a Han Solo origin film set to be released in 2018 as part of the Star Wars anthology series.

Disney, which bought LucasFilm in 2012 for $4 billion, confirmed the movie, in a statement with comments from the directors: “We pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us,” said Miller and Lord.

The Han Solo movie will be part of a standalone anthology series, the first of which, Rogue One, comes out in 2016. Separately, the first film in the new trilogy, Episode VII: The Force Awakens, comes out in December of this year.

As THR notes, the Han Solo news should be candy to big Star Wars fans for a number of personal details about who is involved. Miller, who will-co-direct, interned at LucasFilm when he was younger and, at one point, even put on a Stormtrooper costume at George Lucas’s request. Meanwhile, the screenplay is being written by father-son team Jon and Lawrence Kasdan—the latter, 66, co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as Raiders of the Lost Ark, which starred Harrison Ford, who played the original Han Solo.

To read more about the major bet Disney and its CEO Bob Iger is placing on the new line of Star Wars films, check out our January 2015 Fortune cover story: Bob Iger’s empire of tech.

I don't have any faith in Star Wars origins stories anymore.

" even put on a Stormtrooper costume at George Lucas’s request"
That sounds disturbing. Maybe I'm just reeling from the Jared thing....

Disney "only" paid $3 billion for the whole Star Wars shooting match. I think that's a ridiculous bargain.

Kids freakin' LOVE Star Wars. Adults will go in droves to see a GOOD Star Wars movie. The overseas take will be enormous.

I expect Disney to receive all of their investment back in CASH within two films. They'll own the franchise for free after that.

    A bargain.

Yes they will make tons and tons of money and put out shitty product after shitty product. We all win, The last good Star Wars film was in 1983 Return of the Jedi.

The plan is to emulate Marvel somewhat. Disney wants to put out a "Star Wars" film every year. Episode 7 will probably be awesome and Rogue One will be good too. After that, expect a steady decline into mediocrity, it's just how Hollywood works.

And it's not just Star Wars for that price tag. It's all of Lucasfilm. So they've got Indy too. $3 Billion absolutely was a bargain. Not to mention the marketing and toy revenue.

No word on if Howard the Duck was included.

My opinion is that everyone should go into this new one with an open mind. It wasn't the Star Wars "universe" that made the shitty new movies... It was George Lucas's storytelling. And he's got absolutely nothing to do with these new ones.

We're about to see what a team of Hollywood's best writers can do with the Star Wars universe rather than one man's incredible ego.

    I'm looking forward to it.

Correction. The last good Star Wars film was The Empire Strikes Back. In retrospect, Return of the Jedi only looks good in comparison to the three shitty Star Wars films Lucas made afterwards. In reality, JEDI was and always will be a shitty film.

And really, if you go back and watch that without nostalgia goggles on, you'll realize even that one sucked.

80% of that is an Ewok music video.

Disney realized that billion dollar global films will drive its business, so it purchased Pixar, Marvel and Lucas. Other films are being dropped. It is only producing 12 films this year, which is not much in the scheme of things.

"Robin, Disney turned down my proposal to produce Private Parts 2, I told them it will gross 3x whatever stupid cartoon they release. I'm not sure they are as smart as me. Robin are you there."

I agree. Everyone's bashing "new" Star Warsfilms based on what that dumb dick George Lucas did to the project, not Disney. Give them a chance to fuck it up first. I'd say they're already starting off on the right foot by tossing Lucas' story treatments right in the fucking trash bin.
